Job Description

The Postdoctoral Associate/Research Scientist will serve as a member of the Seafood Economic Analysis and Marketing Research (SEAMaR) team at the Virginia Seafood AREC (VSAREC). The position will contribute to the development and compilation of datasets focused on the U.S. seafood sector (fisheries and aquaculture) and will perform qualitative and quantitative investigations of U.S. seafood sector. The position will work collaboratively with a national network of researchers to develop new tools and analysis for U.S. seafood sectors. This is a one-year funded position, with extension contingent upon additional grant funding. Virginia Tech is unable to sponsor applicants for work visas for this vacancy.

At the Postdoctoral Associate level the position will:
The position is expected to support the execution of research objectives, assist with the preparation of project deliverables, assist with the dissemination of results and findings to relevant stakeholders, and participate in outreach activities. The position will also assist with the development of project reports to sponsors. At the Postdoctoral Associate level, this position is expected to support the development and preparation of new proposals.

At the Research Scientist level the position will:
The position is expected to lead the execution of research objectives, lead the preparation of project deliverables, lead the dissemination of results and findings to relevant stakeholders, and participate in outreach activities. The Research Scientist will be responsible for project management and the preparation of reports to sponsors, meeting any internal VT and sponsor-imposed deadlines. At the Research Scientist level, this position is also expected to lead the development and preparation of new proposals.

Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Associate/Research Scientist will serve as a member of the Seafood Economic Analysis and Marketing Research (SEAMaR) team at the Virginia Seafood AREC (VSAREC). The position will be expected to conduct applied research on the topics of aquaculture and fisheries economics and marketing; preparation of project deliverables and outputs for project stakeholders and sponsor; contribute to the development of new datasets; progress reporting to sponsors; and participate in outreach activities and events.

At the Research Scientist level, the position will also be responsible for project management activities reporting. This position may be tasked with working across multiple projects and in collaboration with broad national teams.

Required Qualifications

• PhD in agricultural or applied economics or related field. PhD must be awarded no more than five years prior to the effective date of the appointment with a minimum of one year of eligibility remaining. (Postdoctoral Associate Level)
• Demonstrated experience with generating data (surveys, web scraping, etc.).
• Demonstrated experience with econometric analysis of data.
• Demonstrated record of publication.
• Experience working in research (Research Scientist Level)
• Demonstrated experience with project management (Research Scientist Level).
• Must already be eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated knowledge and research experience in fisheries or aquaculture.
• Demonstrated knowledge or experience of seafood supply chains.
• Demonstrated experience with enterprise budgets and financial statements.
• Demonstrated knowledge or experience of analytical methods such as technical efficiency analysis, risk modelling, economic impact analysis.
• Demonstrated knowledge or experience working with retail level scanner datasets and/or household consumption datasets.
• Experience using analytical software packages such as Stata, R, SAS, nGene, SPSS, IMPLAN, or similar.

Postdoctoral Associate - $53,550 - $65,029; commensurate with experience.

Research Scientist - $68,001 - $78,000; commensurate with experience.
