Job Description

The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC in Roanoke, VA, is dedicated to the promotion of health and the prevention and treatment of lifestyle-related disease. The Mishra Laboratory at FBRI is seeking a Research Assistant/Research Tech to support research projects focused on cardiovascular and cardiometabolic disease.

The position is primarily research-focused and will support PI-directed in vitro and in vivo studies. Major responsibilities include mouse colony management and genotyping, assistance with animal experiments and exercise interventions, tissue collection and processing, cell and molecular biology experiments, data collection and analysis, and routine laboratory operations. The successful candidate should be detail-oriented, maintain accurate research records, be able to follow established protocols, and work effectively in a collaborative and fast-paced research environment.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining research equipment and supplies, assisting with experimental coordination, preparing data and figures for presentations and manuscripts, and participating in laboratory meetings. The position provides opportunities to learn additional cardiovascular, molecular, cellular, and physiological research techniques under the direction of the PI.

Required Qualifications

• Hands-on laboratory experience in biological or biomedical research.
• Experience with basic molecular biology and/or cell biology techniques.
• Ability to follow research protocols carefully, maintain accurate records, and work independently after appropriate training.
• Ability to manage time effectively and coordinate multiple experimental responsibilities.
• Demonstrated communication, interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
• Demonstrated ability to use standard computer software for data organization and analysis.
• Ability to work respectfully and collaboratively with laboratory members and to maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding non-public research information.

Preferred Qualifications

• Coursework or training in biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field, or equivalent relevant research experience.
• Previous experience working with mice, including colony management, genotyping, tissue collection, or other animal procedures.
• Experience with cardiovascular, metabolic, or related biomedical research.
• Experience with mammalian cell culture, PCR/qPCR, Western blotting, immunostaining, microscopy, or related molecular and cellular techniques.
• Experience collecting and analyzing experimental data and preparing figures or presentations.
• Experience with exercise interventions, physiological phenotyping, or genetically modified mouse models.
• Ability and interest in learning additional techniques required for ongoing laboratory projects.
