Job Title: Manager of Special Collections and Archives

Job Summary:

The Manager of Special Collections and Archives is a frontline member of a very busy, highly esteemed, and team-oriented academic special collections and the university archives department. This position reports directly to the Department head and is responsible for managing the operations of the Special Collections Reading Room, managing the day to day operations of the department, and supervising undergraduate and graduate student workers.

Duties/Physical Demands:

•Supervise and manage all Reading Room operations during operational hours of The Special Collections Reading Room
•Routinely update and implement Reading Room policies and procedures in accordance with best practices.
•Directly supervise a team of at least 12-15 graduate and undergraduate students.
•Research and answer reference questions related to Special Collections and University Archives materials from onsite and remote researchers.
•Manage patron requests for digitization of Special Collections and University Archives materials.
•Supervise the shelving, retrieval, and re-shelving of Special Collections and University Archives materials. Coordinate stacks maintenance projects as needed.
•Assists the Digital Collections Librarian with digitizing materials held in the special collections & the University Libraries.
•Work with the Digital Collections Librarian to coordinate flow of materials from holding collections to digitization production sites.
•Assist with the hiring, training and supervision of student assistants.
•Work with Preservation/Conservation Librarian to identify any issues with physical conditions of the materials.
•Assist the University Archivist with projects as needed.
•Assists with the planning and execution of special events, which may require evening & weekend hours.
•Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Required: Bachelor’s degree.

Desired Qualifications:

Consideration may be given to candidates with:
•Master’s degree in Library or Information Science (ALA-accredited) or Museum Studies
•Knowledge of the proper handling and awareness of the preservation of rare and archival materials.
•Experience working in a special collections department, archive, or academic library.
•Previous supervisory experience.
•Experience using digitization equipment such as scanners and digital cameras
•Excellent written and oral communication skills.
•Must be reliable, detail-oriented, and self-motivated.
•Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently.
