About the role
 
Step into the Senior Legal Counsel – Clinical position, where you will collaborate closely with the General Counsel in navigating the complexities of healthcare operations and ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
 
In this pivotal role, you will ensure that Calvary operates within legal boundaries, providing expert guidance on clinical matters and safeguarding our rights through sound legal advice.
Your expertise will be instrumental in driving quality clinical outcomes and effective claims management, contributing to the overall success and legal compliance of our organisation. 
 
 
Your main duties will include:
  • Claims Management Oversight: Supervise the management of medical malpractice and public liability claims to ensure effective resolution and compliance.
  • Coronial Inquest Support: Advise and assist Calvary with coronial inquests, providing legal guidance throughout the process.
  • National Claims Framework Development: Collaborate in the development and implementation of a national claims management framework to standardise practices across the organisation.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Prepare or oversee the preparation of incident and claims reports as required by Calvary’s insurers and the National Executive Leadership Committee.
  • Clinical Incident Legal Management: Work with and advise the National Clinical Governance Manager on the legal management of clinical incidents and complaints in Calvary’s hospitals and aged care facilities.
  • Comprehensive Legal Advisory: Provide legal advice on a wide range of issues across Calvary’s service areas, including privacy, consent to treatment, insurance, powers of attorney, guardianship, and general health law.

 

About you
  • 10+ years post admission experience as a solicitor with current Practicing Certificate with tertiary qualification(s) in Law, preferably at Senior Associate level.
  • Experience in a large legal firm or within an in-house health care services legal team will be well regarded.
  • Experience and advanced legal understanding of medical malpractice litigation, professional indemnity matters; public liability matters; coronial inquests.
  • Demonstrated litigation, drafting and advisory skills.
  • Strong track record of managing negotiations and mediations to successful outcomes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interpersonal and client management skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as in a complex environment with staff and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
