About Us
The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB) is located in the historic, vibrant city of Staunton, Virginia. VSDB provides superior education for students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/vision impaired, deafblind, and deaf or blind with other disabilities.

The Purpose of Position:
Assure safe transportation of students and staff and support Facilities Fleet & Surplus Manager with facilities surplus, and vehicle related requests and projects, support Grounds Dept. operations in the summer months. Coordinating with the facilities and grounds departments to ensure a safe and complete operation of all campus facilities and grounds.
Maintain educational and residential school campus with a professional and courteous attitude within acceptable and safe standards in compliance with DOT regulations and facility policies.

Minimum Qualifications

• Working knowledge of grounds maintenance, preventative and general maintenance on equipment, and associated safety practices
• Working knowledge of a small power equipment and the mechanical ability to perform preventive and general maintenance
• Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of fleet vehicles, and associated safety practices.
• Knowledge of Virginia state driving laws and regulations
• Physical requirements: Ability to lift 45-100 pounds, perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending, and climbing, and tolerate various chemicals and weather conditions.
• Written and verbal communication skills.
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions independently.
• Ability to record data, maintain records and complete reports, to include computerized documents/reports.
• Ability to exercise a substantial degree of responsibility and independent judgment
• Must be willing to work various shifts/overtime, which may include weekends, and holidays (This responsibility includes immediate response to deal with agency emergencies and unforeseen events.)
• Ability to follow and to enforce safety practices.
• Able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
• Proficiency level of “Novice” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years.

Valid driver’s license with driving record that reflects sense of responsibility for highway and passenger safety or ability to obtain.
