Purpose of Position
The purpose of this Biostatistician is to serve the School of Medicine and Health Sciences Biostatistics Core to provide support to faculty, staff, and students who engage in research activities. This position will conduct statistical analyses, provide guidance on appropriate study design and statistical analyses, and support collaborative research activities.
Duties & Responsibilities
Conduct statistical analysis and supporting documentation
- Develops and analyzes a variety of research data using statistical methods.
- Provides support and serves as a resource to PI’s, faculty, clinical and translational researchers, other biostatisticians, programmers, and data analysts.
- Assists researchers in developing appropriate study protocols and computer analyses.
- Participates in the development and selection of appropriate statistical methods and tests, sample size calculations and creation of randomization schedules.
- Develops and validates statistical programs in R and/or SAS to support statistical analyses.
- Prepares statistical method sections for inclusion in study protocols, grants, and manuscripts.
- Provides interpretations of statistical results and prepares the relevant statistical sections for study reports, grants, and manuscripts.
- Prepares electronic files using appropriate formats for submission to regulatory agencies.
- Creates and maintains biostatistical documentation, including descriptions of methods, R or SAS programs and results.
Coordination, management, and expansion of knowledge base of statistical support
- Evaluates and proposes new statistical methods for data analysis.
- Participates in the development of standardization procedures for statistical functions.
- Reviews the design and content of database designs and data edit checks.
- Reviews and audits statistical analysis plans, R and SAS programs and statistical reports including tables, listings, and figures.
- Manages computer systems, writes programs, and trains others in the use of systems. Keeps abreast of the latest statistical modeling and computing tools.
- Reviews and helps prepare statistical and database management sections of NIH grant applications and other externally supported proposals prior to submission.
The duties and responsibilities of this position may be completed through a hybrid work environment and flexible work arrangement.
- Maintain a work schedule as outlined in the employee’s approved flexible workplace arrangement including outlined work hours, communication mechanisms, and procedures for communicating with internal and external partners.
- Meet with immediate work team for a minimum of one weekly team meeting via Zoom, Teams, or another virtual meeting platform.
- Attend all required project meetings with internal and external partners via in-person, Zoom, Teams, or another virtual meeting platform.
- Attend events at SMHS and on the UND campus as needed.
Required Competencies
- Advanced skills and understanding of Microsoft Office (Excel and PowerPoint).
- Proficiency in modern high level statistical languages such as R and SAS and in database management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Ability to collaborate effectively with project staff to meet shared goals and be dedicated to quality work.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meeting deadlines and achieving project objectives.

- Ability to travel occasionally to national, regional, or local events/meetings.
- Prefer knowledge of SAS and R (proficiency with multiple statistical programs preferred).
Minimum Requirements
- Master's degree in statistics, biostatistics, computer science, or a related field.
- Three years of experience as a biostatistician, preferably in an academic setting.
- Successful completion of criminal history background check.

Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of one year of experience analyzing longitudinal data in the context of a research study.
- Experience with advanced methods (e.g., survival curves, multiple imputations, propensity scores, geospatial analyses, etc.), manuscript and presentation preparation.
- Experience in database software. Knowledge of additional specialized software (e.g. SQL, Python, ArcGIS, M-Plus, SUDAAN).
- Minimum of two years of experience with health care claims or electronic health record (EHR) data analysis.
