The Honors College at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is seeking part-time adjunct instructors to teach Humans of RVA and VCU, a required 1-credit experiential learning and community engagement course for first-year Honors students in the fall. The course explores the nature of community, Richmond’s history, and students’ roles in civic engagement, while fostering an understanding of the connections between community involvement, social justice, and social change. Students will develop communication skills to engage ethically and effectively with diverse populations and, inspired by Humans of New York, will interview Richmond-area residents and share their stories on social media to challenge stereotypes and embrace the complexity of individual experiences, drawing on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s concept of “the danger of a single story.”
