Under the direction of the Manager, Maintenance Services for the Department of Facilities Services (DFS), and in collaboration with colleagues, the Lead Electrician acts as a lead to electrical personnel. This role provides training, technical expertise, and assistance in performing all duties related to journeyman-level installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems, fixtures, and related devices throughout campus facilities. This role collaborates with DFS and other University departments to initiate and deliver high-quality projects in a timely manner.
Duties
- Oversee and perform troubleshooting, installation, repairs, and preventive maintenance programs for electrical equipment, including power systems from breaker to outlets, lighting system wiring, emergency generators, automatic transfer switches, and inverters.
- Ensure electrical equipment is properly installed and maintained, complies with electrical codes, and adheres to safety regulations.
- Use appropriate tools, relevant plans, and written and verbal instructions to service, replace, inspect, and test electrical systems, equipment, and components, and to detect and resolve malfunctions and deficiencies. Perform all work in compliance with industry standards, best practices, and Pepperdine standards.
- Manage spare parts and equipment. Maintain tools, equipment, and a clean work area.
- Project management, including estimates, budgets, schedules, and status reports. Vendor and contractor management.
- Identify and address issues in need of attention and generate work orders accordingly.
- Work order management, including scheduling, assignments, review, and close out.
- Collaborate with peers to maintain long-range objectives, training plans, and certifications.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external project participants, University administrators, and stakeholders to make sure they are well-informed and that work proceeds on schedule and with minimal impact to University operations.

Skills and Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or its equivalent AND completion of a recognized apprentice training program of at least four (4) years' duration in the electrical trade, or
- High school diploma or its equivalent AND two (2) years of formal training AND three (3) years of full-time, paid experience in electrical work, or
- High school diploma or its equivalent AND six (6) years of full-time, paid experience in electrical work under the supervision of a journeyman or crafts supervisor.
- Broad technical knowledge of practices, principles, and techniques in the electrical field and industry-standard PM processes.
- The ability to understand plans, design specifications, and manufacturers' instructions to ensure proper installation and remedy issues.
- Competency using tools and operating equipment of the trade, such as power recorders, multimeters, amp meters, meggers, infrared cameras, and pipe-bending tools. Knowledge of electrical systems, control systems, and emergency power systems.
- Experience and technical knowledge of practices, principles, and techniques in the electrical field.
- Basic computer skills and competency with Microsoft Office.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills to successfully resolve issues.
- Strong English written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness and ability to periodically work overtime hours, respond to emergency calls after hours/weekends, and work rotating weekend shifts, providing general maintenance duties for the campus.
- Experience in a lead capacity.
- Normal mobility and ability to move around construction sites.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, including up and down stairs.
- Has a valid driver's license and is insurable under the University's standard auto insurance requirements.
Preferred:
- Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, or mechanical trades.
This is a Regular, Nonexempt, 40 hour per week position.
Expected Pay Range: $33.30 - $37.00 per hour
The above pay range reflects what Pepperdine University reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on relevant factors such as work experience, market conditions, education/training, and skill level.
