LCRA is looking for a Diagnostic Technician Lead to join our team. As member of our diagnostic team, you will work with a skilled team of maintenance and diagnostic technicians. Looking to work your way up in a phenomenal company, outstanding benefits, and training, this is the job for you!

At an expert level, performs diagnostic duties using test equipment to evaluate equipment condition such as high voltage transformers, circuit breakers, etc. used in transmission and distribution substations. This position requires niche depth and/or breadth of expertise. Interprets business issues and recommends best practices. Solves complex problems; takes a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions. Works independently, with guidance in only the most complex situations. May lead functional teams or projects Progression to this level is limited based on business requirements.

You will be trusted to: 

- Leads in the installation, adjusts and performs tests on electrical utility equipment in substations, powerplants, and industrial plants.
- Performs maintenance, evaluation, and documentation of required diagnostic tests which includes circuit breaker operator, profile testing, insulation power factor, transformer combustible gas, DC winding resistance, circuit breaker motion and contact analysis.
- Performs oil analysis for substation electric equipment including but not limited to load tap changers (LTC), transformers, potential transformers (PT), current transformers (CT), circuit breakers, etc.
- Operates testing equipment such as software-driven equipment and power factor (e.g. Doble M4200 controller, Vanguard electronic TTR, etc.).
- Assists Substation Maintenance in the maintenance and repair of substation equipment; may assist in the replacement of parts or substitution of parts.
- Performs complex troubleshooting of control circuits in electrical utility equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, etc.
- Develops and summarizes test results and records of substation equipment and associated equipment including trouble reports.
- Performs low and high voltage switching according to procedures and in coordination with System Operations personnel.
- Performs diagnostic survey work, including infrared, partial discharge measurement, battery impedance, battery strap resistance, acoustic emission and basic substation inspections.
- Performs work by traveling independently or with a small crew to various locations (substations, power plants, water systems, etc.) as scheduled, and provides guidance to less-experienced team members.

You qualify with:

- Seven or more years of experience in electric utility equipment maintenance, three phase power systems, substation equipment maintenance or using test equipment.
- A degree(s) in electrical power theory, electronics, instrumentation, controls, industrial maintenance or relevant field may be substituted per LCRA guidelines for certain years of experience.
- Driver’s license

You are a great fit with:

- Must obtain Class A Texas commercial driver’s license within one year (365 days) of hire as a condition of employment.

- Knowledge of substation equipment, 3-phase power systems, electronic testing equipment, AC, DC, and electrical fundamentals and analysis.

- Knowledge of power quality concepts (e.g. power factor, transformer turns ratio, etc.).

- Advanced skill in reading and interpreting diagrams and prints.

- Skill in the use of electrical testing equipment.

- Skill in communicating effectively with team members, supervision / management and external.
