About the Role
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Animal and Plant Biosecurity Research and Diagnostics. In this pivotal role, you will operate with a high level of autonomy, responsible for the strategic delivery of services and the management of diagnostic and research initiatives. Your leadership will be essential in ensuring that the diagnostic and research efforts align with the department's objectives, particularly in the area of biosecurity. You will work on developing effective cost recovery strategies for research and diagnostics. As a leader of a world-renowned premier biosecurity facility, you will manage a diverse team of scientists, fostering an environment of respect, collaboration and excellence in science.
Your responsibilities will include overseeing large-scale projects, collaborating with various stakeholders to navigate complex regulatory environments. You will also be tasked with managing budgets effectively, optimizing resources, and implementing innovative approaches to research management. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will engage with a wide range of internal and external professionals and external research partners. Furthermore, this role requires a high level of confidentiality to uphold the department's reputation.
About You
To excel in this role, you must have a proven track record of leadership within scientific research, particularly in the fields of animal and plant biosecurity. Your experience should include managing teams in a research or government setting, or experience gained from working in large complex private sector entities. You will have a strong reputation for leading research initiatives and fostering a culture of accountability and innovation. You should possess a solid understanding of financial management principles related to research funding and budgetary constraints, with the ability to think creatively to reorganise work processes to operate efficiently.
You will be adept at building relationships with various groups and will have the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of interdisciplinary collaboration. Your strategic vision will help guide the department's future directions, ensuring that research efforts are focused on high-impact areas. The ideal candidate will also be open to travel between research sites, as collaboration across locations is key to the success of our biosecurity initiatives.
You’ll be someone who can:
- Operate with a high level of autonomy and be fully and directly accountable for the advice you provide to all levels of government and stakeholders
- Achieve high levels of employee engagement during periods of strategic change
- Demonstrate a solid understanding of government decision making systems and processes
