VDOT Salem District is looking for our next Senior Engineering Technician in our Materials Department!

VDOTs Construction Materials division is seeking a skilled individual to sample and test materials used for highway construction and maintenance such as asphalt, aggregates, hydraulic cement concrete, soils and rock in a lab and field setting. In the lab, this position works as part of a team to test samples of asphalt concrete, hydraulic cement concrete, aggregates, and soils. This position utilizes standard procedures to sample and test materials, records and analyzes data, maintains accurate records, and prepares technical reports for quality assurance of construction/maintenance materials. In the field, this position works as part of a team to assist with geotechnical drilling and core sampling of asphalt, soil, rock, and aggregate as needed. Field work includes assisting with drill site preparations, equipment mobilization, manual support to include heavy lifting and work on all types of terrain and in all weather conditions. Assists in other areas as needed.
This position is physically located in Salem, VA.

Minimum Qualifications

• Skill in the use of materials sampling and testing equipment.
• Valid driver's license.
• Experience reflecting knowledge of highway construction, maintenance methods, materials and usage.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Ability to work in the area of low-level ionizing radiation.
• Ability to work with and train others.
• Experience reflecting knowledge of materials sampling and testing procedures.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to obtain combination of certifications that apply to specific materials position within 12 months of employment.

Additional Considerations

• Current possession of required materials certifications.
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Civil Engineering, or related field desired.
• Ability to interpret plans, drawings, manuals, test methods and specifications.
• Knowledge of materials quality control and quality assurance practices.
• Prior experience in materials testing, construction, maintenance or a related field.
• Experience working in teams with VDOT Construction, Contract or Producer per-sonnel.
