Job Duties

We have part time positions open in Bedford County, Virginia.
As a maintenance laborer, you will:
• maintain knowledge of safety rules, regulations and laws to ensure safe and proper use of equipment
• demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: consistently identify workplace safety
hazards, wear, proper personal protection equipment, advocate for safety in the team
environment
• follow guidelines to properly set work zones and to safely perform traffic control duties.
• respond to emergency and severe weather events; prepare and operate equipment for snow
and ice removal, and respond to other types of road hazards
• perform manual labor such as clearing drainage pipes, mowing, weed eating along guardrail,
cutting brush, pothole patching, looping asphalt, etc.
• complete pre-trip equipment inspections, perform preventative tool and equipment
maintenance.
VDOT is an emergency response agency, and you may work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
Minimum Qualifications
You may be minimally qualified if you have:
• ability to learn and consistently apply safety policies and protocols
• ability to learn and perform roadway and roadside maintenance tasks
• ability to perform heavy manual labor; may frequently lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
• skill in the operation and maintenance of diverse hand and power tools such as chainsaws,
wrenches, shovels, etc.
• ability to work in diverse outdoor environments and weather conditions
• ability to respond to emergency situations during/after normal work hours, including nights,
weekends, and holidays
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel independently among assigned work locations is required
Additional Considerations
Preferred qualifications include:
• experience performing work zone set-up and/or flagging
• experience in emergency operations such as snow removal and/or storm/accident cleanup
• valid CDL Learners Permit (CLP)
• experience operating equipment such as commercial mowers, loaders, ton trucks, etc.
• experience performing preventative maintenance and minor vehicle/equipment repairs

**This is an hourly position and is not entitled to a state benefit package and is limited to no more than 1500 hours in a 12- month period.**
If you posses a CDL/CLP your interview will include an onsite skills demonstration.

-Fingerprint-based criminal history records check
Additionally, required for CDL holders:
-Full Query drug and alcohol history in FMCSA Clearinghouse – Register at: FMCSA
Clearinghouse.
-Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
-Federal DOT pre-employment physical
This position also requires approved safety shoes (this is a reimbursable expense).
