Job Duties
Norfolk State University’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts invites applicants for a
full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Drama and Theatre in Technical Direction and
Scenic Design, 75% course release time will be granted as a Technical Director & Theatre
Generalist. Integral to this position is the demonstration of practical initiative; respectful,
courteous and cooperative relationships; affirmative, efficient and ethical working practices. Applications must be submitted by November 30, 2025, for full consideration. The position will remain open until it is filled.
The candidate will teach courses in Stagecraft & maintain regular office hours, be responsible for the supervision of all scenery construction and the scene shop, train all students during lab hours in the shop, be available as needed during evening and weekend rehearsals and productions, serve as carpenter, scenic charge, technician, and crew chief for all productions & events presented by NSU Theater Company, adhere to and participate in the development of production timelines, communicate construction progress and lead load-in, set-up, and strike, maintain an accurate inventory of all scene shop tools and equipment, serve as a technical assistant for all occasional speaker and panel event activity in Brown Hall Mainstage and Studio Theaters.
Minimum Qualifications
1. An MFA in Technical Direction
2. Experience working in a scene shop.
3. Ability to supervise university crew

1. Experience with supervision and leadership
2. Membership in professional organizations such as IATSE, USA, USITT, etc.
3. Earned, current OSHA 30-hour Training Program Certificate and DOL Card
