Job Duties

Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute (NVMHI) is a Virginia state psychiatric hospital seeking a full-time Psychiatrist. Patient population is fully inpatient, ages 18-65, civil and forensic, acute to chronic, with complex and diverse psychiatric and co-morbid medical issues (managed by Primary Care). NVMHI is quite unique, in that it offers traditional benefits of the state system (generous leave, benefits/pension, etc.), but in contrast to a “typical” state hospital:

• Is located in Northern Virginia (Fairfax County specifically), one of the most sought-after major metropolitan areas in the country, with excellent schools, amenities, shopping, restaurants, and every possible convenience.

• Has partnered with Inova Fairfax Hospital, Northern Virginia’s flagship medical hospital, to begin a new ACGME-accredited Psychiatry residency program in the 2026-27 academic year. All our psychiatrists are welcomed to be faculty in our new Inova-NVMHI Psychiatry residency program, and prior to this, we have already been an established teaching hospital with residents and medical students from various programs.

NVMHI has had excellent Psychiatrist retention for several years, with stable leadership, over which time we have developed a positive, supportive, and collaborative culture, and it is a rare opportunity for us to have a Psychiatry position available. We invite interested candidates to consider us and potentially join a medical staff of skilled clinician-educators who have dedicated their energies to caring for some of the most challenging patients in the community, teaching the next generation of medical trainees, and offering public service, all while living and working in one of the most desirable regions in the nation.

Minimum Qualifications

Unrestricted medical licensure by the Virginia Board of Medicine.

Board Certification preferred but board eligible accepted.

Medical degree and completion of an ACGME-approved residency training in Psychiatry.

Additional Considerations

Board Certification preferred.

Inpatient psychiatric experience preferred.
