The Role:

Duration of term: 12 months: 26 weeks Anaesthetics, 26 weeks ICU

ICU Term

Hours of work are 80-90 hours per fortnight as part of a 24 hour coverage registrar roster

In Hours 

The ICU specialist is directly available, and physically present in the unit for the majority of the working day, as well as an ICU Registrar.

After Hours

The ICU specialist is exclusively available for the unit, and on close call. Consultant call backs are frequent it is expected that all major management decisions are run past the consultant, this includes changes recommended by external medical teams.

Critical Care RMOs are contributing to the day to day clinical management of patients in the Intensive Care Unit, under direct supervision of ICU registrar and consultant staff.  Ward rounds twice daily with the consultant and registrar assigned to the unit, in addition to physical consultant presence in the unit for most of the normal working day.

Critical Care RMOs along with ICU registrars are responsible for the completion of documentation, including daily updates to the handover sheet, discharge summaries, APACHE data, pathology forms.

It is expected that Critical Care RMOs will to attend all ICU teaching sessions, which occur regularly on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.  These sessions include:

  • discharge summary and data audit
  • weekly education topic covering the fundamentals of intensive care
  • weekly echo / critical care US teaching
  • monthly morbidity and mortality audit
  • at least one advanced resuscitation simulation session per quarter
  • Provide teaching at these sessions and for UTAS medical students

Anaesthetic Term

This rotation is 100% supervised by Specialist Anaesthetist Staff

After Hours

There is 24-hour Registrar cover on site for Internal medicine, General surgery, Paediatrics, O&G and ICU.

The main duties of the Anaesthetic Critical Care RMO, under the guidance of the Anaesthetic Registrar and consultant are:

  • Day to Day clinical management of patients in the Division of Anaesthesia.
    • Assessment and management of patients prior to procedures
    • Prescribing of predications,  medications for the recovery area (PACU), and the immediate post operative period.
  • Attend and present on pain ward rounds as rostered and work with the Pain nurse on weekends to review all referred patients under the supervision of the Duty anaesthetist
  • Legible and accurate completion of all paperwork:
    • Comprehensive patient notes – ward round documentation and anaesthesia charts
    • Referrals – inpatient
    • Medication charting
  • Order, review and interpret appropriate investigations in clinic and prior to emergency and elective procedures
  • Perform medical procedures when required:
    • Venepuncture
    • Venous blood gas/arterial blood gas
    • Intravenous cannulation and arterial cannulation
    • Airway assessment and manipulation
    • Performance of simple local anaesthetic blocks and the opportunity to participate in major regional anaesthesia.
  • Participate in family meetings as required
  • Work professionally within the healthcare team of anaesthetic consultants, registrars, fellow JMOs, nursing staff, allied health, non-medical support staff and pharmacists.
  • Attendance at RMO and unit teaching program and maintenance of their continuing professional development.
  • Maintenance of their mandatory education modules as per the THS requirements.

Details of Appointment

Fixed term, full time, day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing from 12 January 2026 until 10 January 2027.

Please note that hours may be negotiated with the successful applicant

Classification: 

Salary $95,275- $108,150 per annum (pro rata) + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging

  • Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

Eligibility

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria:

  1. General or unconditional registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  2. Current Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements)

  1. Current Driver’s Licence (if applicable to allocated role)

Under particular circumstances employees may be required to undertake a new conviction check.
