The Role

Reporting to the Manager – Flood Hydrology and Environmental Monitoring this role will undertake analytical, observational, and supervisory tasks with autonomy, encompassing office and field-based activities. Responsibilities include ensuring continuous availability of high-quality data from the hydrgraphic network for informed business decision making, managing hydrographic services contracts, initiating improvement projects, troubleshooting network issues, and overseeing project delivery. Additionally, the role involves in-field safety checks, flood operations responsibilities including forecasting, and active participation in health and safety initiatives for oneself and colleagues. This will be achieved through:

  • Maintaining data quality and overseeing our monitoring networks through various online systems such as SCADA, Hydstra, FEWS, Maximo, GIS, and Operational Data Store (OSI – PI)
  • Leading project initiation for improvement initiatives pertaining to Melbourne Water's Hydrographic Network.
  • Managing troubleshooting and addressing issues concerning hydrographic monitoring equipment, stream gauging stations, and data collection.

Salary MW EA Level 7 starting at $105,603 plus superannuation.

Your Skills and Experience

  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of hydrography and hydrology.
  • Demonstrate strong personal qualities such as interpersonal skills, initiative, and clear communication abilities, both verbally and in writing.
  • Show familiarity with flood prediction, warning provision, and response procedures.
  • Have practical experience in data management, analysis, and reporting, ideally within water resources, environmental management, or engineering domains.
  • Hold a relevant tertiary qualification in hydrology, engineering, or science, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Undergo a pre-employment Health Assessment.
  • Possess a valid Victorian Driver’s License.
  • Benefit from an operational vehicle in accordance with MW Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Obtain AusCheck Clearance. (please see important information below*)
  • Participate in an on-call roster, available 24/7 (minimum of one week in every six weeks) for emergency response.

*Important Information

The Security of Critical Infrastructure (SoCI) Act 2018 requires Melbourne Water, as an operator of critical infrastructure, to prepare a Critical Infrastructure Risk Management Program (CIRMP), which has been undertaken and managed by the Security and Emergency Management Team.

Melbourne Water are required to assess roles across Melbourne Water to determine what roles are critical under the Act. All employees working in a role deemed SOCI critical will require additional background checks via AusCheck. The role of Hydrology Specialist is deemed critical and the preferred applicant will be asked to undertake an AusCheck.
