About the Opportunity
We are seeking a motivated Irrigation Technician Trainee to join our Open Spaces team, working exclusively on the Monash University contract based in Clayton (VIC).
Whether you’re entering the irrigation industry for the first time or looking to build hands on technical skills while completing a nationally recognised qualification, Programmed will support your development through structured training and on the job experience. You’ll gain practical skills while completing your Certificate III in Irrigation, working in a supportive and professional environment alongside experienced Supervisors.
This is a full time 24-month traineeship offering strong long term career potential, with a clear pathway and strong opportunity to progress into a permanent Irrigation Technician role upon successful completion, subject to performance and business requirements. You’ll work on a unique and secure contract at Monash University that includes advanced irrigation and water harvesting systems, providing exposure beyond standard irrigation work.

Traineeship Pay & Progression
Pay rates are aligned with the relevant award and increase as you progress through the traineeship.
Adult rates: Year 1: $24.99 per hour || Year 2: $26.55 per hour
Junior rates: Year 1: $17.18 per hour || Year 2: $20.31 per hour
Successful completion of the traineeship provides a strong opportunity to transition into a permanent full time Irrigation Technician role, which is the preferred outcome for this position. Permanent Irrigation Technician roles commence at a rate of over $31 per hour, in line with the applicable award.
What You’ll Learn & Do
Throughout the traineeship, you’ll gain practical, hands‑on experience while completing your qualification.
You will:
- Assist with the installation, operation and maintenance of irrigation systems
- Learn irrigation design principles and system layouts
- Work with pumps, valves, pipework and irrigation controllers
- Support water harvesting systems and pressure management
- Carry out inspections, fault finding and basic repairs
- Learn about modern irrigation technologies and products
- Work safely outdoors while following workplace health and safety procedures
- Complete training and on‑the‑job learning requirements
What This Traineeship Will Set You Up For:
By the end of the traineeship, you’ll have:
- A Certificate III in Irrigation
- Strong technical skills in irrigation system maintenance and troubleshooting
- Strong technical knowledge across pumps, valves, water systems and controls
- Experience working in a large, complex institutional environment
- A clear and supported pathway toward permanent full time employment as an Irrigation Technician
