The Opportunity

The discipline of Urban Planning and Design within the Faculty of Art Design and Architecture (MADA) at Monash University invites applications for a fully funded, 3-year PhD scholarship for commencement in Semester 2, 2018. We seek applications from candidates with a background in urban studies (e.g. urban planning, geography, sociology) and an interest in land use, economic development, urban design, and/or urban redevelopment. The scholarship provides a stipend of $27,082 per annum tax exempt for three years along with additional research and travel support.

The PhD will work under the supervision of Professor Carl Grodach and will have the opportunity to develop their own research topic around one of three research themes:

  1. critical studies of place-based arts interventions and creative placemaking policy
  2. industrial gentrification, zoning, and alternative models of mixed-use development
  3. international comparative studies of craft manufacturing industries

Candidate Requirements

The successful applicant will have an excellent academic track record in urban studies and will be comfortable conducting spatial and data analysis to understand geographic and historical trends as well as qualitative case study research. He/she should be familiar with debates around urban economic development and urban cultural policy, possess excellent writing and oral communication skills, and be proficient in GIS. Experience or interest in international, comparative work is ideal.

Candidates will be required to meet Monash entry requirements, which include English-language skills. Scholarship holders must be enrolled full-time and on campus.
