About the organisation

The McKinnon Institute for Political Leadership (MKI) is a non-partisan organisation committed to contributing to a better future for Australia. The organisation seeks to raise the standard of political leadership in Australia through providing professional development for aspiring and established political leaders and their advisors. A partnership between the Susan McKinnon Foundation and Monash University, the McKinnon Institute was established in mid-2019, and began providing professional development to Members of Parliament in 2020.

About the role

The Head of Programs leads the programs function within the Institute, ensuring the development and delivery of a portfolio of quality professional development programs that work to improve the performance, capabilities and standing of Australia’s political leaders. Reporting to MKI’s CEO and Academic Director as a member of MKI’s senior leadership team, the Head of Programs works closely with the Director of Research to advance MKI’s academic agenda. This includes engaging with MKI’s expert Academic Advisory Panel (AAP) and building trusted relationships with a diverse faculty, the Board, Monash University and the Susan McKinnon Foundation. Leading a small team, the position plays a hands-on role in developing and delivering transformative learning experiences and quality interactions with senior practitioners and academics, and is accountable for ensuring programs are delivered at quality, on time and on budget.

About you

You are a senior professional with considerable teaching and learning program delivery experience – or are alternatively a highly experienced policy or political advisor – with proven experience at the senior leadership level. Pragmatic, persuasive and politically astute, you are able to build credible relationships across the entire political spectrum, free from ideological bias. A structured and creative thinker, you are adaptive and agile, with a contemporary leadership style that allows you to drive outcomes through inspiring and empowering others. With a nuanced understanding of politics and policy, you are energised by the prospect of putting your considerable abilities to work in uplifting the capability of Australia’s current and future political leadership.

Diversity is one of our greatest strengths at Monash. We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, culturally and linguistically diverse people, people with disabilities, neurodiverse people, and people of all genders, sexualities, and age groups.

Be part of our story. Work with us to #ChangeIt.

Monash avidly supports flexible and hybrid working arrangements. We have a range of policies in place enabling staff to combine work and personal commitments. This includes supporting parents.

Your employment is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of all pre-employment and/or background checks required for the role, as determined by the University.
