The Opportunity

The Lead Systems Engineer will support Monash University’s Public Cloud presence, with a special focus on Generative AI capabilities and services. The role encompasses designing, building, and managing infrastructure across Microsoft Azure and AWS, contributing to the university’s AI initiatives. The position is critical in ensuring operational excellence in cloud environments and driving the adoption of cutting-edge AI technologies.

This role will contribute to enhancing the Vice-President (Services) portfolio by adopting and promoting best practices, policies, and standards for cloud and AI infrastructure management.

As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for:

  • Cloud Infrastructure Management: Design, build, and manage Monash’s public cloud infrastructure across Microsoft Azure and AWS, ensuring operational efficiency and security. This includes maintaining and automating infrastructure for AI services, focusing on scalability and performance
  • Planning and Implementation: Contribute to the strategic planning and implementation of cloud and AI initiatives to optimise the operation, control, and reporting of cloud and AI systems and services
  • AI and Machine Learning Development: Lead the deployment and integration of AI/ML technologies, with a particular focus on generative AI services. Develop and implement AI solutions, providing expertise in frameworks such as LangChain and LangGraph
  • Automation and Python Expertise: Apply strong Python scripting skills to automate cloud infrastructure and AI-related processes, facilitating seamless integration and scaling of cloud-based AI tools and services
  • Operational Procedures and Problem-Solving: Execute operational procedures for cloud and AI infrastructure in accordance with best practices in IT Service Management. This includes troubleshooting and resolving technical blockers in AI adoption, as well as providing hands-on technical support to remove challenges in cloud service integration

About you!

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Demonstrable experience building, automating, and managing public cloud services, particularly in Microsoft Azure and/or AWS
  • Strong expertise in AI and machine learning technologies, with a focus on generative AI
  • Strong Python experience, with knowledge of generative AI agentic frameworks such as LangChain or LangGraph
  • A hands-on approach to technical problem-solving, with the ability to remove blockers and challenges in cloud and AI infrastructure adoption

As part of this role, participation in an on-call roster for cloud services may be required, along with occasional travel to other Monash campuses.
