The School of Philosophical, Historical and Indigenous Studies (SoPHIS) undertakes teaching and research and includes: the Philosophy Program; the Monash Bioethics Centre; the History Program; the Archaeology and Ancient History Program; the Monash Indigenous Studies Centre; the Australian Centre for the Study of Jewish Civilisation and the Monash Centre for Consciousness and Contemplative Studies. The School is one of five Schools in the Faculty of Arts in Australia. The School has administrative responsibility for the faculty major in International Studies. The School’s teaching covers many of the key areas of human societies and includes programs at all levels: research degrees, postgraduate coursework, and majors within the Bachelor of Arts. It forms an active research community, producing many publications for both scholarly and general audiences. 

With over 60 years of rich history, the Monash Indigenous Studies Centre (MISC) is a vibrant hub for learning and research in Australian Indigenous Studies. As one of Australia’s oldest and most respected centres in the field, MISC brings together students, researchers, and communities to explore Indigenous cultures, histories, and contemporary issues. The Centre champions a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach and is deeply committed to furthering understanding and praxis in the many disciplines we engage. MISC is also known for its consistent record of Australian Research Council (ARC) success including in ARC Centres of Excellence, Laureates and other research programs and fellowships. MISC is proud to offer research-led teaching that inspires meaningful engagement and change and we look forward to meeting prospective candidates who would like to join our dynamic team.
