The Opportunity
Join a pioneering research initiative exploring the future of Australian cities through innovative architectural thinking. This Level B research-only academic position offers an exciting opportunity for an outstanding candidate with a background in architecture, urban design and/or co-design to contribute to the ARC Discovery Project “DESIGNING DIGNITY.” The project reimagines public bathroom amenities as vital urban assets—positioning them as anchor buildings, social infrastructure and “Infrastructures of Care” that support thriving, inclusive communities. By adopting a place-based research approach, the project aims to reconceptualise the role of these modest yet essential civic buildings in responding to the social, political and environmental challenges shaping contemporary Australian cities.
As a Level B research-only academic, the appointee will contribute to collaborative research activities, produce high-quality publications and conference outputs, support the supervision and development of junior research staff, and assist in the preparation of research proposals for external funding. The role requires strong analytical and communication skills, experience in research publication and mentoring, and the ability to work both independently and within an interdisciplinary team. Expertise in urban design, inclusive or participatory co-design practices, and project and stakeholder coordination will be highly valued, along with advanced digital and visual communication skills.
