The Opportunity

The Accounting Officer provides high-quality, operational research finance business partnering services to Monash University clients. The role delivers accurate financial transactions, expert advice, data maintenance and analysis, while building strong relationships with stakeholders. By doing so, the Accounting Officer plays a critical role in enabling the team to deliver specialist research and revenue accounting services that support informed decision-making and compliant research outcomes.

This position will be responsible for preparing and analysing complex financial reports and proactively engaging with internal clients and stakeholders to resolve issues and ensure clear understanding of financial positions and grant conditions. It will support the development of research grant and contract budgets, provide ongoing financial reports and forecasts, and ensure projects remain on track. The role will coordinate financial acquittals for external funding bodies, ensuring compliance with funding rules and formats, respond to complex financial enquiries, and provide authoritative advice. It will monitor and update contractual milestones, investigate and resolve issues, perform data analysis using University systems, maintain strong stakeholder relationships, ensure compliance with all financial, tax, audit and governance requirements, and contribute to continuous improvement in research and revenue accounting practices.

What you will bring to the team

  • Relevant qualifications and/or experience in accounting or finance, with demonstrated capability in research and revenue accounting environments.
  • Strong research finance knowledge, including reporting, budgeting, forecasting, grant monitoring and financial acquittals in line with funding conditions.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly and confidently to clients with varying financial literacy.
  • Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills, enabling proactive identification, investigation and resolution of financial issues.
  • Exceptional organisation and attention to detail, with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and maintain accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, exercising sound judgement, initiative and accountability within a team.
  • Advanced systems and data capability, including strong data analysis skills and experience with SAP or similar financial systems (GST knowledge desirable).
