About the Role:

As Design Director, you will lead the delivery and maintenance of the University’s comprehensive Design Guidelines and act as the primary advocate for best practices in design across all campuses. From managing design consultants to overseeing design implementation for capital projects, this role ensures that La Trobe’s design ambitions align with its strategic vision and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage external design consultants, including architects and engineers, ensuring alignment with La Trobe's design standards.
  • Coordinate and enforce compliance with the University’s Design Standards throughout all project phases.
  • Lead the Safety-in-Design process and integrate Property/Asset management requirements into documentation.
  • Drive value management exercises and ensure cost efficiency in design processes.
  • Oversee design implementation during construction to uphold quality and strategic goals.
  • Provide expert guidance on design solutions for capital projects, campus reconfigurations, and FFE standards.

About You:

We seek a motivated, innovative leader with exceptional organizational and communication skills. You will bring:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, construction, or related disciplines.
  • At least 10 years of experience in large-scale commercial design and construction projects.
  • Expertise in local building codes, sustainability frameworks, and design approval processes.
  • Proficiency in tools like AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and Aconex.
  • A commitment to ESG principles and innovation in design practices.
  • The ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive environment across teams and stakeholders.
