About the position

A Level C teaching and research academic is expected to develop curriculum, teach and/or undertake research and/or other scholarly work relevant to the development of their discipline or professional field. An academic at this level will make a significant contribution to the discipline at the national level.  They will normally play a major role or provide a significant degree of leadership in scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession.

The position holder will have a strong understanding of current issues and research that impact contemporary teacher practice and pedagogy, which could include discipline areas such as, Science Education, Mathematics Education, Humanities and the arts. A focus on evidence-based strategies including the learning sciences is highly desirable. Demonstrated experience in developing high quality teaching and learning programs underpinned by current research in pedagogy and teacher practice at a tertiary and/or school level is essential. The position holder will also understand diverse theories that inform learning approaches from a range of theoretical dimensions to lead change. The position holder will have a research track-record and a program of research that will inform evidence-based approaches to research projects, course and teaching delivery. There is an expectation for a demonstrated track-record in working with school and sector leaders to further strengthen course and research collaborations.

As a Level C Academic some of your duties at this level will include:

  • Design, coordinate and teach subjects and courses which provide a high-quality learning experience that engages undergraduate, honours and postgraduate students.
  • Design innovative and effective curriculum which reflects developing best practice nationally and internationally, utilising various methodologies including online and blended learning.
  • Contribute to La Trobe’s Scholarship of Teaching (SoLT) and disciplinary teaching pedagogy and research.
  • Conduct and lead innovative and high impact research and produce conference and seminar papers and publications resulting from that research.
  • Contribute to building a robust and ambitious research culture within La Trobe.
  • Maintain professional practice skills/knowledge and expertise at state/nationally recognised level.

Skills and knowledge required for this position:

  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent accreditation and standing recognised by the University/profession as appropriate for the relevant discipline area.
  • Demonstrated experience in pedagogy and teacher practice, which could include discipline areas such as, Science Education, Mathematics Education, Humanities and the arts, and a sophisticated understanding of current research and trends that inform quality pedagogy in a range of learning environments to drive change.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in developing innovative curriculum using evidence-based approaches for quality learning opportunities.
  • Sophisticated ability to engage with industry leaders in education to develop opportunities for course and research collaborations.
  • Strong record of research publication, with appropriate evidence of quality and impact.
  • Success in obtaining research funding from grants/contracts/consultancies.
  • Proven experience and success in managing staff performance and development.

Desirable

  • Graduate Certificate in Higher Education or evidence of equivalent professional preparation for Higher Education teaching.
