About the position

This position is for a Research Fellow to join the Biogeochemistry and Ecotoxicology Group at La Trobe University led by Prof. Ewen Silvester and Dr. Aleicia Holland and the Biodiversity and Ecology Group led by Dr Michael Shackleton. The successful applicant will work on developing data analysis workflows that combine high-performance data analytics with ongoing advances in Earth observation systems to build tools for real-time and historical monitoring of alpine peatland condition across the Australian Alps.

This position will be largely desk-based, however, the applicant will also be required to contribute to related field work across the Australian Alps.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct and publish or otherwise disseminate high quality and/or high impact research as a member of a team or independently and produce conference/seminar papers and publications from that research.
  • Contribute to writing up research findings for publication and dissemination.
  • Identify and harness a range of new analysis techniques and data sources in developing science solutions to the key challenges of real-time condition monitoring.
  • Analysis of large spatial and temporal remote-sensed datasets and development of advanced models to enable the monitoring of historical and real-time condition of alpine peatlands.
  • Analysis of time-series data and development of periodicity metrics to describe change over time for hydrological data.
  • Development of enhanced visualization tools and/or Apps to allow clients to track peatlands condition and construct long-term condition parameters

 

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have:

  • A doctorate or equivalent qualifications or research experience in a relevant discipline area, such as ecological modelling, remote sensing, spatiotemporal modelling, machine learning, or ecology/biogeochemistry or similar with experience in remote sensing or modelling.
  • A record of publications, conference papers and/or reports, or professional or technical contributions which provide evidence of strong research potential.
  • Sound analytical skills with an ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated experience in spatial modelling and/or working with large spatiotemporal data analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop advanced data visualization tools and/or apps
  • Evidence of advanced statistical modelling or data analytics skills, and programming capabilities in one or more languages relevant to spatiotemporal modelling (e.g. Python, R).
  • Driver’s license
  • Preparedness to work outside normal hours and during inclement weather in alpine environments, on occasion as required
