About the position

The Research Office supports La Trobe University researchers, Senior Executive, Academic Leadership, and La Trobe Professional Portfolios to facilitate excellent research outcomes for the University. The office provides accurate and consistent advice and reporting, as well as flexible and efficient client services, with an emphasis on continuous business improvement.

The Research Development and Grants Team in the Research Office oversees Research Development and the end-to-end pre-award development of all competitive research grant funding, including Australian Research Council (ARC), National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), Philanthropic and other local and international schemes. The team works with researchers across all campuses in partnership with school management, especially the Associate Deans Research and Industry Engagement (ADRIE) to develop and implement targeted strategies and initiatives to improve quality of external research proposals and thereby success rates.

The Senior Grants Advisor will be responsible for the implementation of a successful category 1 funding strategy for La Trobe University by partnering with the Associate Deans Research and Industry Engagement (ADRIE). They will be a subject matter expert on Category 1 schemes, especially ARC, NHMRC and MRFF schemes. They will provide expertise and guidance to La Trobe’s research community, members of the Research Development and Grants team and Senior Executives on all category 1 matters and will be the university contact for funding agencies, especially the Australian Research Council .

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have:

  • A relevant postgraduate degree, extensive professional experience or an equivalent combination of relevant knowledge, training and/or experience in research administration.
  • Demonstrated track record in working with researchers to develop successful category 1 schemes, with experience in ARC schemes.
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience with a range of Australian competitive grant schemes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to transfer clear and concise information to stakeholders, and the ability to present workshops or facilitate discussion.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop high level working relationships and professional networks, and to engage with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
