Your next opportunity

An opportunity exists within Boral's Capital Projects Team for an experienced Project Lead Electrical Engineer to take ownership of Boral’s mine infrastructure upgrade in Marulan. The Marulan limestone mine supplies approximately 2 Mt per annum of limestone as the principal raw material to the Berrima Cement and Lime operations, and a further 1 Mt per annum of limestone aggregate, manufactured sand and agricultural lime to internal and external customers. This important project for Boral will involve the relocation of the primary crusher as well as workshop, office and stores. Other aspects of the project will involve tunnel and surge stockpile infrastructure reclamation, rail shunt realignment plus associated electrical works, earthworks, civils and demolition works.

Your day will involve:

  • Design and Technical Assurance
    • Own the electrical basis of design and ensure all electrical, instrumentation and control deliverables comply with Boral standards, applicable Australian Standards and the approved design criteria.
    • Review and approve vendor and consultant deliverables, including single line diagrams, load schedules, protection and coordination studies, arc flash studies, earthing design, hazardous area classification where applicable, cable schedules, control philosophy and functional design specifications.
    • Ensure the control system architecture, PLC and SCADA scope integrates with existing site systems and the operational control philosophy.
    • Participate in HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA and functional safety reviews and close out electrical and control actions.
    • Operate the electrical design change control process and assess technical, cost and schedule impact of every proposed change before endorsement to the Project Director.
  • High Voltage and Power Supply
    • Own delivery of the high voltage scope, including the Marulan South power supply realignment, substations, transformers and high voltage switchgear.
    • Manage the interface with the network service provider and any connection, metering and protection settings requirements.
    • Plan and control outages and tie-ins so that supply to the operating plant is maintained and production disruption is minimised.
    • Ensure high voltage switching, access and authorisation arrangements comply with site and statutory requirements, and that only authorised persons perform switching.
  • Procurement and Vendor Management
    • Prepare electrical and control technical specifications, scopes of work and technical evaluation criteria for major equipment and installation packages.
    • Lead technical evaluation of tenders and provide a documented technical recommendation to procurement and the Project Director.
    • Manage vendor technical performance through the manufacturing period, including inspection and test plans, factory acceptance testing of switchrooms and motor control centres, and expediting support for long lead items.
    • Support management of Best Cost Country sourcing risk, including compliance of imported electrical equipment with Australian Standards and the electrical equipment safety scheme.
  • Construction and Installation
    • Supervise electrical installation through the electrical site co-ordinator, verifying compliance with drawings, specifications and hold points.
    • Manage electrical contractor technical queries, non conformance reports and site instructions, and escalate commercial consequences promptly.
    • Verify cable installation, terminations, earthing and equipment protection prior to energisation.
    • Maintain the electrical punch list and drive close out ahead of practical completion.
  • Safety, Health and Environment (SHE)
    • Provide visible safety leadership within the electrical team and hold contractors to Boral's Life Saving Rules.
    • Own electrical critical risk controls, including isolation and verification of stored energy, live work prohibition, arc flash, high voltage access, working at heights and mobile plant interaction.
    • Ensure electrical work packs, permits, isolation procedures and safe systems of work are in place before work commences.
    • Ensure electrical design eliminates or minimises risk at source in line with WHS duties on designers and the obligations applicable to a NSW mine site.
  • Commissioning, Handover and Close-out
    • Own electrical completions, including test records, protection settings verification, loop checks, motor rotation checks, energisation and functional testing.
    • Lead pre-commissioning and support performance testing of the crushing and conveying circuit, including control system tuning and interlock proving.
    • Deliver the electrical handover to operations, including as-built drawings, protection settings, software backups and licences, spares recommendations, and operator and maintainer training.
    • Contribute electrical lessons learned to the post implementation review.
  • Interface and Reporting
    • Manage discipline interfaces with mechanical and civil scope, including drive and instrument mounting, cable routes, trenching, pits, conduits, and switchroom foundations and buildings.
    • Manage interfaces with the operating plant so that tie-ins, outages and commissioning minimise disruption to limestone supply.
    • Report electrical progress, risk, cost and schedule status to the Project Director on the agreed reporting cadence.

What are we looking for?

  • Minimum 10 years electrical engineering experience in resources, cement, quarrying or heavy industrial capital projects, including a discipline lead role on a project of comparable scale.
  • Demonstrated delivery of high voltage works, including substations, transformers and high voltage switchgear, from design through to energisation.
  • Demonstrated delivery of electrical and control systems for crushing, screening, conveying or comparable bulk materials handling plant.
  • Strong working knowledge of AS/NZS 3000, protection coordination, arc flash assessment, earthing design, and motor control centre and variable speed drive specification.
  • Experience with PLC and SCADA based control systems and integration with existing site systems.
  • Demonstrated site-based construction supervision experience in a brownfield, live production environment, including outage planning and staged energisation.
  • Any experience in the cement, lime or quarry operating environment will be highly regarded.
