Are you a registered Psychologist or Social Worker who identifies as Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander? We are inviting applications for a Student Counsellor who has extensive experience working in Aboriginal communities or with Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander clients to join our team, based centrally in our iconic North Terrace Campus.

With supportive guidance, The Student Counsellor, Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander Specialist exercises autonomy to provide professional counselling and case management assistance to Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander students, and other students as required, to support positive academic outcomes and student retention. This position also supports academic and professional staff to create a University environment that promotes culturally appropriate student wellbeing and access and inclusion initiatives.

The Division of Academic and Student Engagement (DASE) partners with students, staff and the broader community to deliver an outstanding student experience. At the heart of the student experience are transformational opportunities in learning and teaching.

The Student Experience branch within DASE is responsible for providing services that deliver an excellent student experience. This includes administrative and support services to students as well as service to, and partnership with, academic staff in the development of a high-quality, engaging and relevant learning environment.

To be successful you will need:

• Extensive experience in providing therapeutic counselling, assessment, risk assessment, crisis intervention and case management support to clients.
• Extensive demonstrated experience working in Aboriginal communities or with Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander clients in any setting.
• Broad knowledge and understanding of the wide range and complex needs of Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander students within a tertiary education setting.
• Well-developed ability to establish rapport and form a therapeutic alliance with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team and liaise, negotiate and resolve conflict in complex situations.
• Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.

Qualifications:

• Relevant tertiary qualifications and extensive relevant experience.
• Eligibility to register with the Psychology Board of Australia through AHPRA, and/or the Australian Association of Social Work.

This position requires a valid Working with Children Check.
