Job description:
The International Affairs team is responsible for leading Tasmania’s international trade relations and providing sound country intelligence for the state to be globally competitive.
The International Affairs Advisor reports to the International Affairs Manager and works closely with the International Affairs Advisor, Economist, broader Trade and International Relations team, and key government and industry stakeholders, to support a range of international relations functions.
The role has a particular focus on coordinating internationally oriented partnerships, such as delivering sister-state work programs and maximising engagement with policy institutes, think tanks and international business councils. The position requires strong organisational and stakeholder engagement skills, as well as attention to detail and sound judgement.

Period of Appointment
Appointment to the role is on a fixed term flexible basis (up to 73.5 hours per fortnight) for 12 months.
Duties
- Coordinate the delivery of agreed work programs relating to sister-state relationships and other government-to-government arrangements where relevant to Tasmania’s trade relations. This includes managing projects, monitoring legislative and policy requirements, and liaising with Tasmanian industry and local, state and federal government stakeholders.
- Review, secure and maximise engagement with international business councils, policy institutes and think tanks, where there are opportunities to facilitate business connections and gather market intelligence.
- Regularly engage with identified stakeholders across government to maintain awareness of their international activities, inform the work of the Trade and International Relations team, and share updates on international policy developments.
- Professionally represent the Tasmanian Government at meetings and events relevant to the role.
- Prepare a range of written items, including briefs, talking points and responses to ministerial and executive correspondence.
- Undertake research, analysis, logistical and administrative tasks that support the work program of the International Affairs team, which includes hosting inbound diplomatic visits; engaging with Australian overseas posts; providing market intelligence to government and industry; and supporting the International Affairs Manager on specific projects where required.
- Support the broader Trade and International Relations unit to deliver cross-team projects.
- Perform any other assigned duties at the classification level that are within the employee’s competence and training.
Desirable Requirements
- Experience working in a government and/or international affairs related setting
- Tertiary qualification/s in a relevant discipline
- Driver’s licence
