About the role:
 
We’re on the hunt for a Paralegal to join our Legal Team based in Melbourne.  The Paralegal provides independent, high quality, timely and practical advice to support the business to make effective decisions, take effective action and achieve successful outcomes while managing legal risks and requirements.
 
What you’ll be doing:
 
Team operations:
  • Team meetings: Participate in team meetings and follow up agreed actions.
  • Legal and regulatory compliance: Help the Legal team to stay up to date with changes in laws.  Anticipate the legal needs of the business by proactively identifying legal trends, risks and opportunities.  Work with other members of the Legal team to develop and deliver timely and relevant legal and compliance training to other SCA teams. 
  • Legal systems and materials: Help to implement and administer appropriate systems, templates and other standard documents to share knowledge and facilitate efficient conduct by the Legal team and SCA of common business transactions and activities
Areas of responsibility:
  • Trade promotions and competitions: Assist promotions and content teams with development and implementation of trade promotions and competitions, including preparation of required terms and conditions, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Complaints and investigations:  Monitor and manage complaints received by SCA under the Commercial Radio Code of Practice.  Work with radio content teams to respond to complaints from consumers and investigations by ACMA in relation to compliance with the Broadcasting Services Act and the Commercial Radio Code of Practice
  • Advertising materials: Review advertising scripts and advise on compliance with applicable laws, regulations and codes (including the Australian Consumer Law, Therapeutic Goods Administration Act, Consumer Credit Code, the AANA Code of Ethics, state and territory gambling and alcohol advertising laws, and the Commercial Radio Code of Practice).
  • On-air, digital and social media content: Assist content teams to ensure that on-air and on-line content complies with applicable legal and regulatory requirements (including the Commercial Radio Code of Practice, music licensing requirements, and laws relating to copyright, defamation and contempt).
  • Trademarks and other IP: Assist the Legal team with research, registration and searches in relation to intellectual property matters.
  • Contract administration: Help to maintain an online Contracts Register and procedures for maintaining and administering the Contracts Register as a tool to assist SCA teams effectively and efficiently to manage contracts.  Over time, this may develop to include administration of properties owned or occupied by the business.
Experience we’re looking for:
  • Substantial experience working as a lawyer or paralegal in an in-house legal team or law firm.
  • Experience in trade promotions and managing legal risks within the media industry or similar (highly desirable).
  • Substantial experience working with on-line systems for management of assets such as contracts, intellectual property, and knowledge resources.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
