Position Summary

The Faculty Advisor for Student Career Services and Admissions will report to the Assistant Dean for Student Career and Professional Development.  The Faculty Advisor for Student Career Services and Admissions will support the Assistant Dean for Student Career and Professional Development routinely in advising activities, resource development, alumni engagement, scholarly activities, and instructional and training initiatives within the college for faculty and students.   

The Faculty Advisor for Student Career Services and Admissions will also collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Admissions of the College of Human Medicine in strategic efforts to recruit and admit a diverse student body with the potential to serve in geographic and specialty-related healthcare shortage areas. The critical support to Admissions will inform College recruitment and permit alignment of career and professional development goals, resources, and curriculum with student body needs. 

The advisor will work in close partnership with the Office of Admissions and the Office of Student Affairs and Services to support college-wide programming and provide comprehensive assistance to candidates from admissions to graduation, ensuring a seamless and supportive academic and professional development experience at CHM.  

The Faculty Advisor for Student Career Services and Admissions will collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Admissions to develop and implement recruitment strategies that will attract a diverse applicant pool to the College, with the goal of admitting students who will fill geographic and specialty-related healthcare shortage areas throughout Michigan and beyond. Upon matriculation, the advisor will introduce students to career advising services during orientation and will continue to provide resources and career advising support throughout the first two years of medical school. 

The Faculty Advisor for Student Career Services and Admissions will represent the college in building and maintaining relationships with college alumni to advance career advising efforts and mentorship in the college. This work will include recruiting, training, and prepping alumni to conduct practice interviews with medical students applying to their graduate medical education programs. Also, the Faculty Advisor for Student Career Services and Admissions will identify and train alumni who are engaged in alternatives to traditional clinical practice to mentor medical students who are interested in learning about these pathways in medicine.  

The Faculty Advisor for Student Career Services and Admissions will contribute to the collection and analysis of data related to evaluating the career advising initiatives in the college and participate in relevant research and scholarly work. The Faculty Advisor for Student Career Services and Admissions will be encouraged to hold leadership positions within the AAMC and present their scholarly activities. This position will hold Faculty teaching hours determined by the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education (ADUME) to ensure alignment with curriculum needs and goals.  

Also, the Faculty Advisor for Student Career Services and Admissions will be responsible for delivering instructional career advising-based content to the first and second-year medical students in small groups to help them strategically explore specialties and understand workforce trends. The Faculty Advisor for Student Career Services and Admissions will also help to train and onboard new physician career advisors who will also be providing this instructional content. The Faculty Advisor for Student Career Services and Admissions will work to ensure that instructional content is delivered in a standardized way to students through the training and observation of the faculty involved in this teaching.  The Faculty Advisor for Student Career Services and Admissions will report important feedback on the effectiveness of educational materials and resources in teaching students and training physician career advisors to the Director of Medical Student Career Advising and the Assistant Dean for Student Career and Professional Development.   

The successful candidate will be knowledgeable in career development theory and have at least five years’ experience with medical education, including advising adult learners, scholarly engagement, and physician training. The successful candidate will have experience of working with students and/or colleagues from diverse backgrounds. This position may require out-of-state travel.

Required Degree

Doctorate -MD, DO, PhD, or similar terminal degree.

Minimum Requirements

Physician candidates (MD or DO) is required. Candidates must have at least five years’ experience with medical education, including student mentoring/advising. Regular periodic travel to the eight (8) college communities throughout the state of Michigan and out of state for Admissions purposes is expected.

Preferred candidates will demonstrate a dedication to student success and effectiveness by working with students at various progression levels. The candidate should have experience in working with students, faculty, staff, and/or colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Candidate should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills; and the ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders within a complex, matrixed organization. The candidate should have a strong desire to mentor and support medical students from admission to graduation through evidence-based practices and resources.
