Position Summary
This full-time position serves as the Business and Operations Coordinator for the Michigan State University Press. Reporting to the Director of the MSU Press, this position will coordinate the day-to-day operations of the business functions of the MSU Press and be responsible for the duties listed below.
Characteristic duties:
- Review and interpret author, editor and contributor contracts for details of royalty agreements. Ensure details are properly entered into the CDC royalty module, obtain proper taxation documentation, and process royalty statements. Update and maintain addresses for authors, editors, and contributors as long as the book stays in print; when book goes out of print, remove from royalty database. Answer all inquiries on royalty statements and resolve any discrepancies with the CDC royalty manager. Run royalty reports for each statement period, and make corrections in the database as needed.
- Manages requests from individuals, institutions and through the Copyright Clearance Center.
- Maintains database for contractual agreements for books and journals, tracks expiration dates and rights information. Obtain and maintain tax documentation for authors. Enter royalty advances into the CDC royalty system.
- Drafts, circulates, records, and files author, contributor and other press contracts.
- Identifies ways to improve operational efficiency, provides process improvement recommendations, and generates and implements solutions within designated area of responsibility.
- Reviews and processes invoices, disbursements and procurement card purchases and payments.
- Manages deposits for ebook payments and journal subscriptions. Work with payers to complete documentation to send deposits electronically.
- Manages distribution partner payments and reporting.
- Works closely with MSU Libraries Fiscal Officers on requisitions and on financial reports. Helps to review and reconcile any errors or omissions.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through the first two or three years of college, such as an Associate’s degree in a business-related field or in university presses; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in performing tasks related to university presses; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working in academic publishing and/or royalty processing.
- Experience in copyright/rights sales and contracts.
- Competency with Metacomet and Firebrand royalty/publishing software.
