Position Summary
The MSU Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, in partnership with Michigan EGLE and MDARD, is seeking a research assistant for a project focused on identifying aquatic plant species in trade. The successful candidate will assist with the genetic component of this work, which involves collecting a minimum of 500 aquatic plant samples from various trade sources. The research assistant will perform DNA extraction and whole chloroplast genome sequencing to accurately identify plant species, detect mislabeling, and document identification gaps.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in ecological genetics or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in DNA-based species identification of tissue samples; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Master's degree, experience with DNA extraction, genetic sample archiving and databasing, and preparation of Illumina DNA sequencing libraries.
