Position Summary

Salary:  $27.31 - $32.49 upon step increase progression.   MSU Benefits - Free comprehensive health care for you and your family a s well as a 10% contribution toward your retirement; Generous sick, vacation, personal and holiday time; Not Eligible to work a partial remote schedule.  

This position will assist in performing and performs maintenance, repair, and installation of power plant equipment such as boilers, turbines, and generators. Assists in the maintenance of auxiliaries such as pumps, heaters, compressors, and other associated equipment. This position will also assist in performing maintenance, re pair, replacement, or installation of piping to include fittings, valve s, insulation, etc. Assists in removing, replacing, and installing power plant associated equipment, including rigging, hoisting, setting, connecting, aligning, start-up, etc.
 
Regular in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs.

In addition to an initial drug test at hire, the employer conducts random monthly drug testing throughout the year.

Job responsibilities are as follows: 
25%: Assists in the maintenance and repair of major equipment such as boilers, turbines, and generators. Assists in the maintenance of auxiliaries such as pumps, heaters, compressors, and other as sociated equipment.

25%: Assists in performing maintenance, repair, replacement or installation of piping to include fittings, valves, insulation, etc. Assists in removing, replacing, and installing power p lant associated equipment; including rigging, hoisting, setting, connecting, aligning, start-up, etc.

20%: Participates in and successfully pass training programs required to advance to Power Plant Mechanic II.

10%: Operates power tools and cutting torches. Assists in the performance of structural welding, brazing, and soldering.
   
10%: Performs routine preventive maintenance such as lubrication, periodic inspection, and cleaning of equipment.
10%: Participates in other department-related training programs. Per forms other related duties as required to support plant operations.

Minimum Requirements

Completion of a high school education or an equivalent combination o f technical training and experience; Two years of experience in millwright, pipefitting, welding, or related maintenance mechanic work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.; Working knowledge of the materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions in a power plant work environment; Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position; must be able to drive a university vehicle to perform job duties of this classification.  Possession or attainment of MSU Forklift Operator's permits prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period; Possession or attainment of asbestos abatement certification prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period; Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds with occasional lifting over 75 pounds; Must furnish own hand tools.

Desired Qualifications

Three years of experience in millwright, pipefitting, welding, or related maintenance mechanic work.  Experience with pump repair, gear box repair, precision tools, blueprint reading, rigging, and/or engine repair.  This position requires, or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.

Summary of Physical Demands

Duties associated with this position involve wearing a respirator (does not include paper dust mask worn for comfort), lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, pushing/pulling, and climbing ladder, stairs, and working from various types of equipment, including scaffolding, confined spaces above and below ground.

Summary of Health Risks

Possible exposure to asbestos and silica.
