Position Summary

Summary:

Clarifies, interprets instructions, orders supply and prepares and compounds medications and other pharmaceuticals in order to fill prescriptions issued by physicians. Provides professional assistance to staff and patients.

Job duties:

  • Examines prescription orders to verify legal, clinical, and accuracy of fill standards are met.
  • Counsels' patients on appropriate use for prescription and OTC products.
  • Maintains and updates files on billings, policies and medications.
  • Answers questions from staff, patients and physicians on medication usage, drug interactions, and drug utilization.
  • Handles customer relations, insurance, vaccine administration and inventory control.
  • Participates in departmental activities.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post- bachelor degree work, a Bachelors of Science in Pharmacy (five-year program) and a one-year internship; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in computer and bookkeeping skills, knowledge of billing procedures and compounding and dispensing pharmaceuticals and chemicals; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and an active Pharmacy and Controlled Substance License in the State of Michigan.

Desired Qualifications

Certification in administering immunizations.

Experience in Medication Therapy Management.

The job requires moderate physical effort and involves standing and viewing VDT screen more than 75% of the time.

Summary of Health Risks

Exposure to human blood, serum, and other body fluids; and materials covered under Universal Precautions; TB risk or work within three (3) feet of patients in a health care setting; wear a respirator.
