About the role

 

This is an Aboriginal Identified position where Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. These positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act (1977).

 

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has a unique opportunity for a Project Officer to work as part of the Fire and Incident Operations Branch. The Fire and Incident Operations Branch leads the development of fire and incident related strategy, policy and planning for NPWS. The branch works closely with fire management staff across Park Operations Branches and various other teams in NPWS and the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW).

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with extensive knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultural fire management. The position has a key role in NPWS policy, guidelines and tool development, contributing to internal and external groups, program planning and delivery to support cultural fire activities and build capability across the organisation. The Project Officer will be responsible for providing diverse project management and support services on matters related to cultural fire management.

About You

You’re a highly organised and self-motivated individual, with extensive knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultural fire and prior experience in working with land managers and firefighting authorities. 

You have strong Aboriginal cultural knowledge and capabilities and understand the importance of cultural context and respectful engagement. You’re also an excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing, with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across a range of stakeholders both in person and through virtual networks.  You demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal colleagues to ensure culturally responsive practice.

As a Project Officer, you are adept at managing competing priorities and working collaboratively with inter-connected teams. You will have exposure to high-volume work within a large complex organisation and have a passion for achieving outcomes in a changing and diverse environment.

Your strong communication and problem-solving skills, combined with your ability to work both independently and as part of a team, will enable you to thrive in this role.

 

Essential requirements

  • This is an Identified role under Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 and as such Aboriginality is an essential requirement. Aboriginal identified positions are developed where Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act (1977) for Aboriginal people who meet the following criteria: 
    • is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and 
    • identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and 
    • is accepted as such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community. 
  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent relevant working experience in project management.
  • Experience in development and delivery of projects, including the preparation of project plans, monitoring of project timelines, budgets and reporting requirements, and contract administration.
