About the role

A Planning Officer at NPWS plays a key role in preparing clear, engaging, and policy-aligned plans and strategies for the management of national parks. Their work supports conservation outcomes while enabling appropriate and environmentally sustainable recreation and public access. They collaborate with Aboriginal organisations, boards of management, and joint management committees to ensure plans respect and protect Aboriginal cultural values. The role involves efficiently preparing and reviewing plans of management under the NPW Act, addressing contentious park management issues through skilful plan design and engagement processes, and contributing to statutory processes for plan adoption and amendment. Planning Officers also engage with communities, liaise with advisory bodies, assess threats to park values, and provide timely, well-researched advice to support effective and inclusive park management.

About you

Your passion for environment, community, a proficiency in project management, strong attention to detail and a well-developed knowledge of planning and assessment, will be key to your success in this role.

You'll be adept in providing and translating high level advice and information to various stakeholder groups on environmental considerations relating to construction and infrastructure works, support project reviews to update status, risk and emerging environmental or project related issues.  

Essential requirements

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or experience in a similar working environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the subject matter including contemporary issues, best practise, relevant legislation and statutory obligations.
  • Current Australian Class C Driver’s license or equivalent.
