JOB SUMMARY:
The Director, Artificial Intelligence Strategy is responsible for leading the strategic development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation initiatives throughout the organization. This role identifies and leverages AI and automation technologies to improve operational efficiency, enhance decision-making processes, and drive innovative solutions to complex business challenges. This role supports delivery teams in guiding the selection, implementation, and management of AI and automation projects, while ensuring these initiatives adhere to ethical standards, compliance requirements, and risk management protocols. Through effective leadership and strategic direction, the Director will play a pivotal role in enhancing the organization's competitiveness and operational excellence in a digital-first environment.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT AND VISION
- Formulate and articulate a clear AI and automation strategy that aligns with the organization's transformation objectives, identifying key areas where AI and automation adds value.
- Conduct thorough market and internal analysis to stay ahead of industry trends and leverage emerging AI technologies for competitive advantage.
- Lead the identification and implementation of AI and automation projects to streamline operations, enhance guest and team member satisfaction, and improve product and service offerings.
- Foster an environment of continuous improvement, encouraging the exploration of innovative solutions and technologies.
- Lead strategic transformation planning and visioning for the Digital & Technology organization in alignment with the overall transformation strategy.
- Establish and oversee governance structures to ensure AI and automation projects comply with internal policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Proactively identify and assess risks associated with AI and automation technologies, developing strategies to mitigate these risks.
- Ensure that all AI and automation initiatives incorporate ethical considerations, particularly in relation to data privacy, security, and usage.
- Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for AI and automation initiatives to evaluate their impact and effectiveness.
- Provide regular, transparent reporting to senior management and stakeholders on the progress, outcomes, and business value of AI and automation projects.
STAKEHOLDER COLLABORATION AND COMMUNICATION
- Act as a bridge between technical teams and business units, ensuring seamless communication and alignment on AI and automation initiatives.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, including IT, operations, finance, and business units, to ensure buy-in and support for AI and automation projects.
- Identify change impacts to team member roles as AI and Automation technologies are integrated into operational functions; lead the education and evolution of team member job responsibilities in partnership with HR and Transformation teams to support a successful roll out and adoption of the technologies.
VENDOR AND EXTERNAL PARTNERSHIP MANAGEMENT
- Evaluate and manage relationships with external vendors and partners to support AI and automation initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and values.
- Conduct due diligence and ongoing performance assessments of vendors and technology partners to ensure compliance and value alignment.
- Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field is required.
- An advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in a relevant field is preferred, emphasizing computer science, machine learning, robotics, or business management.
EXPERIENCE:
- 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in strategic roles within data science, analytics, automation, or related fields, with a clear track record of implementing data science strategies and solutions that have driven significant business impact.
- 5+ years in a leadership position managing teams directly related to data science, machine learning and automation initiatives.
- Lean Portfolio certification, Project management certification (PMI or similar) and/or certification in use of specific methodologies such as Lean Six Sigma, Agile, etc is preferred.
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Deep technical expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning algorithms, data analytics, and robotic process automation technologies.

- Proven capability in developing and executing AI and automation strategies aligned with organizational objectives, including successful management of large-scale, complex projects from inception to completion.
- Experience with implementing AI and automation solutions within large, complex organizations, including integration with existing systems and processes.
- Familiarity with cloud computing environments, big data technologies, and cybersecurity principles relevant to AI and automation.
- A strong understanding of the current AI and automation landscape, including emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities.
- Experience in navigating the legal and regulatory aspects of AI and automation, understanding the implications for privacy, data protection, and ethical use of AI.
- Exceptional leadership qualities, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams towards achieving strategic objectives.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and influencing decision-making at the highest levels of the organization.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strategic mindset that balances innovation with practicality and risk management.
- Demonstrated experience in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks related to AI and automation, including developing and implementing governance frameworks to ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
