JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for routine daily advisement, technical support, and conformance of Team Member and Guest safety and health by supporting the implementation of the EHS Management System, EHS Standards, and associated processes. Partner with EHS peer teams and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to gain understanding and support conformance with all EHS elements. Apply knowledge to routine and well known situations related to the validation (including quality control) of documents and records, evaluation of established EHS processes and practices, effectiveness of prescribed controls, communicating findings and contributing factors, responding to and investigating incidents, and effectively using a range of basic EHS tools and practices to aid the business to mitigate risk, reduce incidents, and drive conformance in all areas of EHS. Participate in or oversee segments of assigned EHS projects.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Hazard ID and Risk Assessment: Applies routine and sometimes skilled knowledge to understood situations by supporting the implementation and documented maintenance of routine Risk Assessments, controls, and processes in operations and emergencies. Contribute to the ID of risk factors, analysis, and prioritization of EHS risks. Advise on hazard controls for routine tasks. In liaison with operational and EHS teams, write or review, and maintain up to date procedures for safe and environmentally sound work. Evaluate both baseline and residual risks implementing the hierarchy of controls to mitigate risk to acceptable levels. Gain understanding and consensus on resulting residual risk scores. Communicate and monitor controls and outcomes.
- Operations: Support the implementation of and monitor conformance with the EHS Management System, policy, and standards. Observe execution of work against Divisional procedures and work plans for deviations which drive or introduce hazards. Facilitate, monitor, and provide feedback on conformance with plans to reduce hazards and impacts and associated risks, provide day to day proactive and collaborative technical advice and support to assigned business area regarding objectives. Participate in emergency response and on-call processes. Focus on key EHS matters driving risk and incidents by collaborating and aligning with the topic SME to include appropriate implementation, inspection, training, documentation, while identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement. Stop work immediately for imminent hazards.
- Support: Understand the requirements, limitations, scope and purpose of regulations, procedures, and standards. Build relationships as a “trusted advisor” to influence line and middle managements understanding of conformance and performance expectations, support and motivate management and Team Members to demonstrate EHS leadership and foster a positive EHS culture. Contribute to the preparation and delivery of on-the-job training (OJT) and formal training materials as requested. Review divisional standard operating procedures (SOPs), job plans and other documentation for EHS matters. Provide routine, accurate, and up-to-date information related to technical matters, conformance, and performance. Actively collaborate with EHS peer teams and SMEs, share resources, foster communication, and remain aligned to a single EHS vision and mission with one set of established goals and objectives to foster consistency of message for business partners.
- Performance: Apply knowledge to routine developed reporting parameters. Monitor the integrity and effectiveness of controls, with emphasis on critical/high risk controls, to identify actual and potential failures. Coordinate, perform, and document inspection activities to monitor presence and use of controls and evaluate conformance. Monitor, and provide feedback on conformance with EHS Standards and processes. Prepare and use direct reading equipment to perform basic measurements and monitoring of work environment. Monitor and report on effectiveness of risk mitigation and EHS management processes. Support processes and procedures to investigate, analyze, record, and report on incidents and nonconformities indicating failures and inadequacies of controls. Support periodic management reviews to systematically assess, monitor, and identify areas for improvement in the EHS management system, action plans, and culture.
- Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering/Management, Public Health, Environment, Biological/Educational Sciences;
- or associated degree is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- 3+ years’ experience in EHS-related field is required.
- Hands-on operational experience: 3+ years’ experience to be considered competent in at least two EHS elements within assigned role. At least basic knowledge of in at least two additional elements;
- or equivalent combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- Operational Management System: Direct day-to-day oversight of 1+ EHS professionals, EHS management system maintenance, risk assessment, supervision, strategic planning, scheduling, performance measurement, conformance validation, EHS Standards implementation, inspections and audits, facilitation of regulatory visits/communications, incident response and management, corrective action plans, training and presentations, liaison with cross functional business lines.
- Must be an initiative-taker with basic working knowledge of applicable health and safety regulations, possess basic business acumen and effective communication skills, ability to identify, analyze, and appropriately communicate and act on information in a range of workplace conditions and unpredictable situations.
- Ability to influence and work on a team by applying communication, collaboration, engagement and listening skills to promote and support change.
- Possess and utilize mentoring skills to develop capability of management team members related to EHS matters.
- Basic ability to develop plans, identify trends, and create short term strategies to mitigate risk.
- Strong computer skills, ability to prepare and deliver presentations, ability to work varied hours and days with most of the time being in the field.
