JOB SUMMARY:
The Product Integrity Engineer provides technical support for compliance-related activities for Universal Destinations & Experiences for custom-branded, direct-sourced, and market consumer goods which are sold at retail or otherwise distributed at theme parks and other locations worldwide. Global vertical product lines currently include, but are not limited to, toys, children’s products, food/drinkware, apparel, souvenirs, stationery, collectibles, and cosmetics.
Under the general direction of the Sr. Product Integrity Engineer, this role serves as a technical consultant to the Parks Global Merchandise Compliance team, Global Product Development teams, internal clients, and external partners by providing appropriate product-level product safety, quality, and regulatory guidance; Universal compliance brand standards; and best practices for specific product types to ensure corporate and regulatory compliance program objectives are met.
This role also applies risk management techniques, procedures, and criteria to carry out tasks related to assigned product lines for assigned geographical distributions in any of the following areas: Product-level quality & safety review & approvals, development of product test plans, identification of / mitigation of potential hazards, conducting regulatory or test method research, maintenance of protocol / SOPs/guidance documents, and vendor communication/training.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Product Compliance Review & Approval
- Perform safety/quality review and approval of products, packaging, claims, and labeling submissions for adherence to applicable regulatory compliance standards, Universal Global Compliance Brand Standards, and internal risk classification.
- Provide direction and/or training to internal clients and external vendors on product classification, testing, and compliance documentation requirements.
- Develop and update compliance review/approval comments for assigned product categories.
Product Testing Process
- Review product test reports, test quotes, and compliance documentation, as assigned
- Assist Senior Product Integrity Engineer with the oversight of the product testing process and collaborate with compliance & testing lab partner(s) on cost, timeline, and process efficiencies.
- Contribute to department cost of goods goals by ensuring test quotes are reasonable and consistent with negotiated test pricing.
- Develop, update, and maintain product test plans for assigned product categories.
- Communicate and consult with Management, product developers, and vendors on any specific technical inconsistencies, testing costs/delays, and testing failures to identify and implement corrective actions to enhance a product’s safety, quality, and reliability.
Test Protocol / Compliance Documentation Maintenance
- Assist Senior Product Integrity Engineer in drafting and maintaining Company product test protocols and internal product risk matrices for assigned areas of geographic distribution.
- Review, implement, and communicate test protocol changes, regulatory updates, and program guidance revisions to Management, product development teams, and vendors.
- Maintain product testing and compliance program documentation, such as training materials, vendor guidance documents, internal presentations, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for internal and/or external partners.
Compliance Research
- Monitor and conduct in-depth research into emerging hazard topics, changing regulations, testing methodologies, and/or compliance trends to provide recommendations to Management for program updates and ongoing process improvements & efficiencies.
- Analyze and interpret new regulations, and regulatory trends for applicability and summarize potential impacts to the compliance programs.
Issue Identification & Response
- Review guest comments and product returns related to guest feedback; and ensure any identified deficiencies are addressed, tracked, remediated, and monitored to closure.
- Participate in investigations for any product-related accidents, injuries, or illnesses related to consumer or guest concerns/returns and assist with the coordination of any product recalls.
EHS
- Understand and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training, and team member involvement activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physical Science, Quality Assurance, or related coursework is required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
EXPERIENCE:
- 5+ years of Quality Assurance, Compliance, or equivalent experience.
- 4+ years of recent experience in consumer product safety management, significant safety issue resolution, or significant safety-related product development required.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- English language (spoken/written/understanding) is required
- Strong written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills is required
- Willingness and ability to occasionally travel domestically or internationally.
- Willingness and ability to communicate with speakers of foreign languages and people of other cultures
- Willingness and ability to participate in meetings and calls in other time zones (times other than standard business hours).
- Self-motivated, accountable, and driven to initiate, plan, resource, and complete projects

- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Integrity, honesty and trust and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality are also imperative to this role
- Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. consumer product regulatory requirements (CPSIA, FDA, State), product safety, and preventative quality systems
- Demonstrated knowledge of hazard analysis, risk mitigation, and product compliance approaches
- Working knowledge of U.S. regulatory agencies (CPSC, FDA, CBP, State)
- Strong prioritization and analytical problem-solving skills
- Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and willing to learn new programs specific to business needs and processes.
