POSITION TITLE:

  • Lead Tech, Fireworks (Compound)

JOB SUMMARY:

Provides the highly-skilled, discipline-specific technical skills needed for the successful operation, handling, storage, and maintenance of fireworks/pyrotechnics in assigned Entertainment areas.  Maintains technical show quality by overseeing transportation, preparation, and storage of fireworks/pyrotechnics and equipment. Applies expert level knowledge and understanding of hazards associated with pyrotechnic and high-risk special effects equipment or systems. Serves as a Lead, with the ability to train others.  Supports Management in directing and coordinating work activities of department and Team Members.  Communicates with Leadership and immediately stops unsafe activity. Ensures the proper completion of and adherence to all policies, procedures, regulations, and documentation as defined by federal, state, and local statutory and regulatory authorities, including but not limited to NFPA, DOT, BATFE, and Universal Orlando.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the daily operations at assigned Entertainment Fireworks Storage Facility, including planning, delegation, and coordination of work tasks.  Effectively delegates work assignments among qualified crew members, lead crew during work startup and stoppage and communicates performance expectations. Complete job tasks such as sorting, storage, preparation (including matching), and maintenance of pyrotechnics and equipment, including the handling of explosive materials. Ensure compliance with safety guidelines, standard operating procedures, and company policies.  This includes adherence to guidelines established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (BATFE), and local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), and Department of Transportation (DOT). Monitor employee productivity, enforce compliance with UO policies, and report non-compliance issues to appropriate leadership.
  • Ensure accurate completion of required documentation to maintain accountability of the locations for fireworks/pyrotechnic devices, keeping in compliance within internal and governmental regulations. Ensure accurate completion of all required documentation for transport of fireworks and articles pyrotechnic between storage facilities and show sites. Ensure accurate completion of all technical documentation to include daily checklists, SOPs, daily FYI, inventory, and other such documentation.
  • Transport explosive materials between storage facilities and/or show sites, to include driving and loading/unloading of trucks and shipping containers containing fireworks and/or articles pyrotechnic.  Adhere to all standards set by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Entertainment department.  Accurately complete all required documentation to support transport of fireworks and articles pyrotechnics between storage facilities and show sites. Safely operates heavy machinery.
  • Act as OTJ Trainer for new and current employees and ensures required training documentation including assessments and check off lists are accurately completed. Maintain and share job knowledge and assist in developing employees. Communicate performance expectations and provide technical training for best practices/techniques along with feedback to technicians. Capture written behaviors to support managerial and supervisory documentation.
  • Perform weekly inspections of pyrotechnic/fireworks magazines and inventory, including documentation, as defined by statutory and regulatory authorities for federal, state, and local authorities.
  • Maintain safe and tidy working conditions in assigned areas.  Ensure upkeep of assigned facilities, coordinate any maintenance needs with other departments as necessary.
  • Communicate and coordinate with other departments or vendors as needed. Communicate resource needs to complete tasks to management, while providing two-way communication with work team and management.
  • Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, material, and other UO property, ensuring proper care, maintenance, and storage is upheld. Ensure a safe working environment and assists with regular
  • inspections. Notify management of any material needs or safety concerns.
  • Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION: 

  • Technical school, Associate Degree, Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE: 

  • 5+ years’ experience with fireworks and/or pyrotechnics within theme park industry preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years’ experience providing work direction leading knowledgeable individuals and promoting teamwork dynamics; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
  • Ability to complete the UO Pyrotechnics and Fireworks training course(s) required.
  • CDL with Hazmat endorsement must be obtained within first 90 days of employment (required) and must remain valid throughout employment.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • This position will need to have an advanced understanding of NFPA regulations 1123,1124, 1126 & 160.
  • This position will need to have an advanced understanding of DOT regulations as relates to the transport of 1.3 and 1.4 explosive materials.
  • Ability to pass the BATFE background check required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals.
  • Accountable to strictly adhere to all policies and procedures, as defined by the Entertainment Department, governing the safe operation of all technical equipment.
  • Intermediate computer skills required, experience with inventory software/systems preferred.

POSITION TITLE:

  • Lead Tech I, SPFX & Pyro

JOB SUMMARY:

Provides the highly skilled, discipline specific technical skills needed for the successful operation and maintenance of the Pyrotechnics/Special Effects (SPFX) elements for assigned Entertainment venues, projects, or events, to ensure highest levels of show quality and a positive guest experience. 

Serves as a Lead, with the ability to train others.  Supports management in directing and coordinating activities of the SPFX department and team members. 

Responsible for the appropriate implementation of all policies and procedures, including high-risk, for assigned area and team, as defined by statutory and regulatory authorities for federal, state, and local authorities, including NFPA and Universal Orlando, governing the safe operation of all technical equipment.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads crews in daily tasks as assigned by management. Actively reinforces company safety guidelines and programs, reports non-compliance. Monitors and adheres to the care, condition, use and storage of tools, equipment and other UO property. Maintains material inventories while planning and delegating work assignments among crewmembers. Communicates performance expectations to ensure proper completion of tasks and provides feedback for recognition and performance improvement.  Will act as the OJT trainer for new and current employees.  Assesses Hazards associated with pyrotechnic and special effects equipment or systems. Determines mitigations with the team and ensures implementation. Completes all documentation and communicates with leadership.
  • Uses expertise to diagnose system failures and provide immediate and long-term corrective actions. Researching various electronically controlled pyrotechnic & special effect equipment. Apply advanced expertise to operate, troubleshoot, and repair equipment. Completes documentation of the repair process.
  • Communicates and coordinates with other departments or vendors as needed. Communicates resource needs to complete the task to management, while providing two-way communications between work team, supervisor, and other management personnel.
  • Ensures proper completion of documentation, including but not limited to, daily checklists, pre-show checklists, pyro inventory and inspections.  Captures written behaviors using the Lead Observation Report to support managerial and supervisory documentation.
  • Provides management with tracking information on completed/ongoing repairs, labor, and material usage. Progress and/or delay with installations, strike, and operational concerns.
  • Operation of heavy equipment which includes forklifts, extending boom forklifts & aerial work platforms.
  • Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION: 

  • Technical school, College or University technical theater program is preferred.

EXPERIENCE: 

Required:

  • 4 plus years’ experience within the assigned technical discipline. 

Preferred:

  • Prior experience within the professional theme park/theater industry in a technical crew chief capacity (electrical, mechanical, special effects, pyrotechnics), or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License - required to operate company vehicles.
  • Ability to pass the BATFE background check.
  • Ability to complete the UO Pyrotechnics training course.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL with Hazmat endorsement (if required).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Accountable to strictly adhere to all policies and procedures, as defined by the Entertainment Department, governing the safe operation of all technical equipment.
  • This position will be required to work outdoors in various weather conditions and will need to access building rooftops via fixed ladders & open staircases.

  • Lead Tech, Show Operator – Pyro/Fireworks

JOB SUMMARY:

Supports management in coordinating the daily operation of assigned venue and maintains venue technical show quality. Assist with the operation and execution of entertainment shows, leads crew, and applies expert level knowledge and understanding of hazards associated with pyrotechnic/fireworks and high-risk special effects equipment or systems. High risk is defined as show elements or practices where life safety is taken into consideration. Communicates with leadership and immediately stops any unsafe activity. Ensures the proper completion and enforcement of all UO, NFPA and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) policies, procedures, regulations, and documentation.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees the daily operations of Technical Entertainment systems, including planning, delegation, and coordination of work tasks. Effectively delegates work assignments among qualified crew members, leads crews during work startup and stoppage, and communicates performance expectations. Ensures compliance with safety guidelines, standard operating procedures, and company policies. This includes adhering to guidelines established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (BATFE), and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs). Ensures proper completion of all technical documentation, including daily checklists, SOPs, inventory, and other such documentation. Complete required training documentation including assessments and check-off lists.
  • Maintains inventory of tools, equipment, material, and other UO property, ensuring proper care, maintenance, and storage is upheld. Ensures a safe working environment and assists with regular inspections. Notify Management of any material needs or safety concerns.
  • Partners with the responsible maintenance team to troubleshoot issues and escalate to management as appropriate. Ensures all daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance checks are completed.
  • Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION: 

  • Technical school, Associate’s degree (AA) or Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

EXPERIENCE: 

  • 3+ years of experience providing work direction, leading knowledgeable individuals and promoting team dynamics.
  • 5+ years of experience using advanced control systems and handling pyrotechnic elements; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Accountable to strictly adhere to all policies and procedures, as defined by the Entertainment Department, governing the safe operation of all technical equipment.
  • Proven ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Emergency repairs, parts assembly, and networking preferred.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to make decisions under stress.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write detailed information such as daily FYI, observations, and assessments.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Basic computer skills with basic experience in Microsoft Office Suite
