JOB DESCRIPTION:

NORC at the University of Chicago is hiring a Statistician to join the Statistics and Data Science department. 

As a condition of employment, all NORC employees and contractors – including those working remotely – must be fully vaccinated (as defined by current CDC guidance) against COVID-19.

 
DEPARTMENT: Statistics and Data Science

The Statistics and Data Science department conducts a wide range of statistical and data science projects, engaging in statistical analysis, modeling, data linkage, statistical matching, disclosure control, small area estimation, and Bayesian analysis, to support all aspects of social science research. NORC statisticians and data scientists design and implement rigorous, efficient methods for sampling, weighting, and imputation for sample surveys and evaluation research. They also employ statistical modelling, machine learning methods, and data visualization for analyzing and interpreting data. The department collaborates with the Methodology and Quantitative Social Sciences department, all NORC research departments, and the Academic Research Centers in addition to conducting research in its own field.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Write and implement computer programs (SAS, R, Python, Stata) to extract and manipulate data; execute statistical work related to sampling, weighting, analytical modeling, and evaluation.
  • Work with the project director or task manager to provide specifications on all statistical matters relevant to the assigned project, including study design, quality assurance, communication of methods and results, data stewardship, and quality assurance.
  • Contribute to or review the statistical sections of reports and other deliverables for technical clarity and effectiveness in addressing the substantive question at hand.
  • Contribute to analyses disseminated via reports or presented at professional meetings; may present results at conferences and to clients.
  • May carry out substantive analysis on projects with analytical deliverables under close supervision, and assist in proposal activities related to sampling, weighting, variance estimation, analysis, and/or study design tasks.
  • Interact with clients on a limited basis to clarify their needs, report on progress, resolve problems, address concerns, and provide information and recommendations; develop and maintain good cross-departmental and intra-departmental working relationships.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Biostatistics or Data Science/Analytics preferred, or Bachelor's Degree with 3 or more years or more of relevant work experience in statistical methodology.
  • Knowledge of the principles, processes, and methods of statistical research and application; understanding of analytic or sampling methods. Experience in survey sampling methods or biostatistics is a plus.
  • Problem-solving capability and computation skills. Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Aptitude for report writing/proposal writing.
  • Proficiency with MS Office software; proficiency with one or more statistical analysis packages such as SAS, R, Python, and Stata. Experience with SAS is a plus.
