POSITION

The Department of Supplemental Instruction at CSU Fullerton invites applications for its Instructional Student Assistant Pool. These positions are Senior Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders and Supplemental Instruction Leaders.

We welcome applications from current CSUF undergraduate students from various departments to support selected bottleneck courses with challenging content and a historically high repeat rate.

This is a pool of Instructional Student Assistants for the department to draw on as necessary. Applications will be reviewed as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidates must be a currently enrolled undergraduate students in their second year at CSUF.
  • Candidates should demonstrate the ability to interact and work effectively with culturally diverse student populations, including first-generation college students.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Earned a high B or A in the course that they wish to provide SI for.
  • Possess effective interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work 10-12 hours a week. Please note that CSUF students can work a maximum of 20 hours a week total between all on-campus jobs.
  • Must attend the mandatory two-day pre-semester SI training one week before the start of the semester. Specific days and times TBD.
  • Must attend the weekly mandatory meeting with the associated department supervisor throughout the semester.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with Supplemental Instruction gained though attending SI sessions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

SI leaders are hired for 10-12 hours a week (depending on the duration of course lectures) for the semester (16 weeks).

* The 10-12 hours are comprised of the following:

  • 2.5 - 4.5 hours sitting in on course lectures.
  • 2.5 hours facilitating SI sessions.
  • 1-hour required weekly meetings with faculty liaison/department supervisor.
  • 4 hours dedicated to session planning, peer observations, and meetings with professor.

*SI Leaders are also paid for hours attended/worked at the mandatory pre-semester training.

Responsibilities of SI leaders include:

  • Attend the mandatory pre-semester orientation and training every semester they are employed.
  • Attend ALL regularly scheduled class lectures/meetings for the class to which they are assigned.
  • Maintain professional attitude and modeling successful student behavior. SI leaders must be on-time to class, attentive, and non-disruptive.
  • Facilitate 2-3 SI sessions each week for the course of the semester.
  • Be present, punctual, and prepared for all SI sessions. This includes creating activities, worksheets, and games to stimulate active collaborative learning.
  • Attend all mandatory weekly meetings/trainings with faculty liaison/department supervisor.
  • Meet with associated professor once a week.
  • Actively promote SI sessions by making in-class announcements, writing SI session times/location on whiteboard, emailing students, etc.
  • Additional administrative duties.

COMPENSATION

All Instructional Student Assistant appointments are made under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CSU system and the United Auto Workers.  Initial appointments are for one semester only. 

Classification Range: $17.01 - $22.70 per hour
Anticipated hiring range depending on qualifications, not to exceed $17.01

ABOUT SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION

Supplemental Instruction is an academic assistance program that provides weekly, peer-led group study sessions for students taking bottleneck, key gateway, or historically difficult courses – those with low pass and/or high withdrawal rates. SI is attached to a subject or course to provide students with a systematic and disciplined approach for processing the subject material assigned by the professor.

SI sessions are led by a SI leader who is an exceptional student and has already mastered the course material; the SI leader has been trained to facilitate group sessions wherein students can meet to improve their understanding of course material, review and discuss important concepts, develop study strategies, and prepare for exams.

This report contains the current security and safety-related policy statements, emergency preparedness and evacuation information, crime prevention and sexual assault prevention information, and drug and alcohol prevention programming. The ASR also contains statistics of Clery Act crimes for California State University, Fullerton for the last three (3) calendar years. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire Safety Report (AFSR)

The purpose of this report is to disclose statistics for fires that occurred within California State University, Fullerton housing facilities for the last three (3) calendar years, and to distribute fire safety policies and procedures intended to promote safety on campus.
