Position Summary

The University Writing Program at the University of Denver (DU) invites applications for a part-time Project Manager position. This person will support the STEM Writing Support initiative in the following broad categories: outreach coordination, communications and marketing, operations management, scheduling, research, and assessment, and hiring of student employees. More specifically, duties will include  supporting the recruiting and hiring of faculty liaisons and student staff; supporting and documenting mentoring cohorts; assisting with orientations, trainings, staff meetings, and workshops for student staff and faculty; collecting and analyzing data on all aspects of the initiative; conducting scholarly and peer institution research on relevant topics; coordinating, marketing, and assessing programs and offerings; and collaborating on the supervision and management of student employees and management and oversight of STEM consulting operations. In all these areas, this initiative is designed to provide extended support for international, multilingual, and first-generation students and faculty in English for Academic Purposes. The Project Manager will collaborate with the Writing Center Director and Writing Program Manager and will report to the Writing Program Executive Director.  

This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year.

Essential Functions

Coordinate outreach initiatives between University Writing Programs and STEM disciplines across campus (40%)

  • Network with faculty and administrators in the College of Natural Sciences and the Daniel Felix Ritchie School of Engineering & Computer Science faculty to collaboratively assess needs for writing support in STEM units. 
  • Develop promotional materials to advertise programs, including peer consulting, workshops, and resources, to campus stakeholders. 
  • Prepare and edit emails, reports, memos on behalf of the executive director on STEM WSI and WAC initiatives.
  • Coordinate the release and announcement of our events.
  • Keep accurate and current records on relationships with STEM faculty and units.

Develop, coordinate, and assess programming across the STEM disciplines (30%)

  • Work with the executive director and WAC-focused faculty to develop program topics and areas of focus.
  • Develop and offer faculty workshops and events to foster better understanding of inclusive pedagogical practices and anti-racist writing assessment practices in STEM contexts.
  • Create and support faculty-led student mentoring cohorts that assist students as they matriculate through their degrees.
  • Curate writing and communication resources for STEM faculty and students in collaboration with writing center staff. 

Supervision and management of student employees and consulting activities (30%)

  • Collaborate with Writing Center director to develop and offer trainings, orientations, staff meetings, assessments, and workshops for student consulting staff
  • Collaborate with writing center director and faculty to support student consultants in offering peer workshops in STEM writing genres and practices
  • Coordinate EAP-focused consulting hours, workshops, and resources
  • Develop promotional materials to advertise consulting activities to campus stakeholders
  • Coordinate and manage writing consulting hours in STEM buildings on the DU campus

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A history of excellent communication and collaboration across academic units.
  • Academic research skills, including familiarity with STEM scholarly databases 
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of standard office equipment.
  • Excellent ability to prioritize. Strong interpersonal skills: tact, discretion, and professionalism are required.  Strong ability to work cooperatively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Self-starter, able to work independently or work well with others as part of a team.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience working with writing in STEM areas.
  • Experience with academic support for STEM students.
  • Experience working with faculty across disciplines.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in STEM related field or in Rhetoric, Composition, English, education, or related field.
  • 10+ years teaching experience in higher education.
  • Experience with STEM grant writing.
  • Experience supervising graduate students.

Work Schedule

This position is for a 15-hour a week non-benefited part-time position paying $50.00 an hour for work done during the months of September through June.

Hourly Rate

The hourly rate for the position is $50.00.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
