Authority and Responsibility of the Department Chair

As an administrator, the department chair has the primary responsibility for communicating the department’s views to the college community and the college community concerns to the department. The chair represents the department and serves as a leader for the entire college. As such Department Chairs must advocate for their department while also keeping the best interests of the college in mind. Department Chairs are provided with course releases as the following responsibilities require additional time. They are also given an administrative stipend as recognition of their additional responsibilities as well as compensation for work that must be conducted during the summer months. In consultation with department members, the department chair has the primary responsibility and authority for:

  • Formulating and communicating recommendations for hiring, tenure, promotion, retention and evaluation of faculty and departmental support staff.   
  • Establishing departmental budget priorities and allocations.
  • Establishing, regulating and monitoring faculty workloads.
  • Recommending leaves and special assignments for the Dean’s approval.
  • Developing and articulating departmental goals.
  • Ensuring that faculty members in the department are good citizens of the college and are fully engaged in departmental and general faculty duties.

PERSONNEL

Faculty

  • Attend Meetings (e.g., Chair, Leadership Team, Faculty and Dean)
  • Evaluate—Faculty (e.g., annual merit review recommendation to Dean)
  • Facilitate—Faculty development, especially in the areas of scholarship, research and teaching 
  • Staff and Adjuncts
    • Supervise—Assigned staff
    • Encourage staff professional development
    • Approve—Adjuncts                                                                                                          

STUDENTS

New Applicants

  • Recruit—New Students
  • Monitor—Enrollment Management
    • Meet with Admissions Director and Admissions Counselor as needed
    • Serve as first contact for Applicants
    • Help plan Interview Day
    • Schedule interviews outside of Interview Day
    • Coordinate review and scoring of applications
    • Communicate to Admissions Director applicants recommend
    • Communicate to Admissions Director recommendations regarding funding
    • Review weekly reports of applicants’ status and compare to program’s understanding
    • Communicate needs to Faculty for interviews, emails, etc.
    • Monitor New Student numbers during the summer
  • Organize and/or Attend—Orientations and Recruiting events
  • Address Questions—Potential students calling or visiting campus
  • Assign—Advisors
  • Monitor—Scholarship Awards; coordinate the application for scholarships for admitted students
  • Award—Specific Program scholarships

Continuing

  • Implement—Advising Plan and Process
  • Address—Student Issues
  • Monitor—Students stopping out or leaving
  • Monitor—Students in trouble with incompletes, non-attendance, illness, behavioral concerns, etc.
  • Meet—Students in trouble; dismissals, etc.
    • First step—Student-Faculty concerns/issues
    • As necessary, recommend termination and monitor termination process
  • Monitor—Scholarship award
  • Award—Specific scholarships
  • Address—Student Complaints and/or Problems; follow established MCE grievance processes

 DEPARTMENTS 

  • Monitor & Facilitate—Development of policies, structures, & procedures for student advising
  • Facilitate—Development & articulation of program goals
  • Monitor—Program budgets
  • Review & Approve—Program handbooks
  • Monitor & Address—Student issues as needed i.e., probationary status, honor code violations, grievances

Curriculum

  • Monitor—Syllabi
  • Review—Curricula and facilitate curriculum revision as needed

Additional responsibilities

  • Provide oversight for accreditation of programs within department
  • Provide authorization for state-approved programs and credentials (e.g., authorization)
  • Foster cross-departmental collaborations (e.g., research, scholarship, community events, etc.)

Required Qualifications

  • Appointed faculty member in MCE

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range:
$13,000 - $15,000 annualized stipend plus course releases

The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
