About the role
In this role, you will deliver meaningful place-based outcomes by developing and implementing place visions and plans that reflect the unique character and needs of each community. You’ll lead both short-term activations and long-term place strategies, working closely with local stakeholders and the community to shape vibrant, inclusive public spaces. While Central Geelong will be a key focus, your work will span the entire municipality, bringing life and identity to key local centres across Greater Geelong.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrated experience in place activation and placemaking, including the development and delivery of place visions, activation strategies, and business support initiatives across diverse urban centres.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills, with a proven ability to build and maintain partnerships with businesses, community groups, internal teams, and external agencies.
  • Proven ability to contribute to strategic planning and implementation, with experience in coordinating work programs, monitoring progress, and delivering outcomes in line with departmental goals.
  • Excellent communication and advisory skills, with the ability to provide subject matter expertise and collaborate effectively with a range of stakeholders across various levels of an organisation.
  • Strong organisational and project management capabilities, including planning, logistics coordination, and the ability to work within budgets and timelines to deliver successful place-based outcomes.
  • Ability to support team culture and capability, contributing to a positive and inclusive work environment through knowledge sharing, mentoring, and supporting change and innovation.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have a tertiary qualification in Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Planning, Project Management or related discipline, complemented by significant professional experience in placemaking or a similar field. Your background will reflect a deep understanding of place-based strategies and the ability to apply this expertise within a complex organisational environment to deliver impactful, community-focused outcomes.

Essential Experience:

  • Demonstrated people skills to support, influence, and collaborate with relevant stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated skills in placemaking, tactical urbanism, place management, community engagement, economic development, project delivery and implementation, event delivery, public realm strategies and policy and or urban design.
  • Lead trader, community and stakeholder engagement that builds cooperation and partnerships internally and externally.
  • Developed writing and speaking skills to align with stakeholders and achieve support for task outcome.
  • Some experience in project management skills, with a focus of managing small to medium sized projects.
  • Solid understanding of local government policies and regulations, along with insights into organisation context and goals related to placemaking and built environments.
