About the role
In this role, you will play a vital part in ensuring the efficient and effective management of the Council's processes related to fire hazard identification and compliance with the Council's Local Law, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) Act 1958, and the Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) Act 1958. Your primary responsibility will be to help the Council fulfil its legislative obligations by mitigating fire risks within the municipality through inspections, issuing notices, and enforcing action (when required).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Liaise with members of the community in relation to complaints, enquiries, Council requirements and educating on fire risks.
  • Assist Team Leader Fire Prevention in the annual review of Municipal Fire Management Plan and the Victorian Fire Risk Register (VFRR).
  • Conduct annual fire season hazard inspections, providing oversight and advice to temporary employees.
  • Preparation of statements which will assist in the preparation of a brief and subsequent appearance in court as necessary.
  • Write reports in relation to any notices or documents issued and make recommendations as to the actions required.
  • Assist with induction and support for all seasonal employees.

About you
The ideal candidate for this role will have prior experience in emergency management or a related field, along with a solid understanding of CFA legislation and fire prevention compliance. You will demonstrate strong resilience, problem-solving skills, and adaptability, coupled with the confidence to engage effectively with a diverse range of individuals.

Essential Experience:

  • Formal qualifications across the Fire and Emergency Management spectrum or substantial previous experience in similar role.
  • Completion of the Municipal Fire Prevention Officer Course or a commitment to complete the course.
  • Substantial experience in Fire Prevention or Local law compliance (including knowledge of the Acts, Regulations and Local Law relevant to the position).
  • Proven ability to liaise with members of the community in relation to problem solving and negotiation.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out investigations, recognise breaches of legislation and compile and deliver appropriate notices.
  • Experience in emergency management and its application to community safety and community resilience (highly regarded).
  • Preferred candidates will be required to undergo a National Police Check as part of the recruitment process (funded by the City).
