About the role
In this role, you will be part of a team of three communications officers within the Corporate Communications department providing primary support for our mayor and councillors for all external communications relating to their Council responsibilities.
Work type: Permanent full time. (Interviews are anticipated to take place in late January 2025).
Classification: Band 6 $90,263 - $97,365 pa plus super
Key responsibilities include:
- Actively contribute to the production of communication and media products to support the City’s long-term vision (A Clever and Creative Future), Council’s 4-year Plan, and the City’s Communication and Marketing Strategy.
- Creation of speeches and speaking notes for the Mayor and Councillors.
- Manage the official social media accounts including regular monitoring and posting both in business hours and after hours as required.
- Contribute to building effective relationships with other staff, customers and various subject matter experts across the City.
- Execute, monitor, and report on work progress against plans and budgets to ensure timely delivery in line with the relevant regulations and policies.
About you
To be successful in this role, you will have extensive experience in journalism and/or a relevant qualification in journalism, communications, media or a related field along with demonstrated success liaising with internal and external stakeholders to plan and manage communications on complex issues.
We are looking for a great writer who can produce clear and engaging content in a range of formats. You need to be able to work efficiently and independently, and manage multiple tasks at once to meet tight deadlines. The ability to build relationships with a diverse range of personalities, including people in senior positions, is essential. Experience planning and delivering engaging social media content is highly desired, as is experience managing media requests and complex issues in a government or similar corporate environment.
Essential Experience:
- Demonstrated understanding of the political machinations of executive government at local, state or federal levels – and highly developed ‘nous’.
- Skills and experience in digital communications (e.g. photography, video editing, and web content authoring and management).
- Awareness of the major issues and opportunities for the City of Greater Geelong and the Geelong region.
- Current Working with Children Check (employee).
- Current Victorian Drivers Licence.
- Preferred candidates will be required to undergo a National Police Check as part of the recruitment process (funded by the City).
