About the role
In this 2-year fixed term contract, you’ll lead the City’s cyber security efforts, driving the detection, response, and recovery from cyber threats. You’ll manage key security platforms and processes, safeguard sensitive information, and help shape a resilient, future-ready cyber security program.

Work type: 2 year fixed-term contract.
Classification: SPL, $148,599 + super.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Implement, operate, and continuously enhance the City’s core security platforms, including SIEM, endpoint protection, email security, identity, and vulnerability management systems.
  • Manage network security operations, covering firewall administration, intrusion detection and prevention, internet security, and segmentation controls to maintain reliable connectivity across all environments.
  • Lead blue team activities, including monitoring, detection, analysis, and rapid response to security events, incidents, and breaches.
  • Develop and optimise detection use-cases, automation scripts, and response playbooks to improve operational efficiency.
  • Drive or contribute to cyber security projects and initiatives, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture and the City’s Cyber Security Strategy.
  • Support audit, compliance, and assurance processes, implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Assess and monitor the effectiveness of core defensive security controls, ensuring compliance with industry standards and security frameworks.
  • Provide expert guidance and leadership to IT security teams and other stakeholders.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have a tertiary qualification in Cyber Security, Computer Science, or related field, and extensive experience in a senior cyber operations or engineering role.

Essential Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in implementing and maintaining enterprise defensive security platforms and controls.
  • Strong understanding of security operations and blue team practices, including monitoring, threat detection, incident response, and vulnerability management.
  • Experience developing, tuning, and automating detection rules, correlation logic, and response playbooks to improve operational precision and reduce mean time to respond.
  • Solid understanding of network security principles, including segmentation, intrusion detection/prevention, and secure configuration management.
  • Advanced skills in investigating complex security issues, correlating diverse data sources, and presenting clear, evidence-based recommendations.
  • Experience conducting vulnerability assessments, managing remediation cycles, and integrating threat intelligence to inform risk-based decision making.
  • Strong knowledge of contemporary cyber security frameworks and standards including ISO 27001, VPDSS, ISM, Essential Eight, and NIST CSF. 

Preferred candidates will be required to undergo a National Police Check and Working with Children's Check as part of the recruitment process (funded by the City).
